Social studies teachers do more than teach history. We help students understand the world, think critically, evaluate information, engage in civil discourse, and become informed and responsible citizens.

From history and civics to geography and economics, social studies education prepares students to understand the past, navigate the present, and shape the future.

Let’s continue advocating for strong social studies programs, supporting our educators, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to become an informed and engaged citizen.

Educate. Empower. Inspire.

Future Leaders Exchange Global Abroad (FLEX Global Abroad) is a U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs cultural exchange program that provides young Americans a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth and fosters the next generation of leaders. Talented high school students from across the U.S. are chosen through a merit-based process to live with a host family and attend high school for one academic year in select countries. As citizen diplomats, students showcase American excellence; learn about innovation, business, and technology in their host communities; develop their entrepreneurial, language, and leadership skills; and strengthen ties between U.S. and their host countries.

For the 2027-2028 academic year, selected participants receive scholarships to live with host families and attend a local high school for one academic year. FLEX Global Abroad programs may take place in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Morocco, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania and Thailand. This year the Application deadline is November 30, 2026 (ET).

The Tennessee Holocaust Commission is building a fully virtual museum, “Holocaust and Victims of N**i Persecution.” Scheduled to debut in Spring 2027 as a fully virtual, immersive, and free resource.

The heart of this museum is its commitment to showcasing Tennessee stories and voices. As such, we invite educators across our state to participate in the project, “Tennessee Remembers.” This project invites participants to create art on an 8.5 x11 piece of paper commemorating the legacies of the Holocaust using specific guidelines. To protect student privacy, we ask that schools supply only the grade and school name (not teacher or student names).

Selected art will be featured in the virtual museum’s central common room.

The fixed deadline for submissions is November 30, 2026.

Attached is a formal letter of invitation with specific guidelines and instructions. Please feel free to email Alison Vick at [email protected] if you have further questions!

The Tennessee Student Mock Election is a great opportunity for students to experience the democratic process firsthand while building important civic knowledge and skills.

Through this nonpartisan educational program, students can learn about citizenship, elected officials, campaigns, the voting process, government, and the Constitution—and then put that learning into practice by conducting their own mock election.

🏫 Tennessee schools are encouraged to participate!

The Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office provides participating schools with mock ballots, “I Voted” stickers, and additional resources to help make the experience meaningful for students.

📅 For the 2026 Tennessee Student Mock Election, schools can begin reporting their results on October 14, with results due by October 28.

Civic education is about more than learning how government works—it’s about giving students opportunities to understand and participate in the democratic process.
