This. This is why I love doing what I do. Capturing exactly this. Thanks for sharing your story Basil & Blossom.
If you're newer here, you may not know that I left a “successful” career in Corporate America to brew kombucha full-time.
Several years ago, I reached a point in my life where I promised myself that I would never again stay in a situation, relationship, or institution that required me to abandon myself. My job had become toxic and was taking a toll on my physical and mental health, and so I left.
I left before I was ready.
I basically leapt and then figured out a parachute on my way down.
The past year and a half of running Basil & Blossom Co full-time has had its fair share of ups and downs.
The highs have been, without a shadow of a doubt, you, my customers.
I know how cheesy that sounds. But I have been blessed by a community that shows up for local food. The New Albany Farmers Market gives me hope for the future because it demonstrates what a resilient, local food system can look like.
Every new person I introduce or reintroduce to kombucha, and every face I see light up when they realize they actually like it, makes the early mornings, long days, and aches and pains worth it.
And then there’s The District. For the past year, I have gotten to exist among a community of makers and genuinely awesome human beings, and I swear I couldn’t have dreamed up this life if I tried three years ago.
But then there are days like today, when I have an unexpectedly slow week and get in my head about whether I can continue. Because I’m wearing about 37 different hats on a daily basis, and I’m trying to make a baby business replace the salary of a 15-year career, and it’s so much pressure.
I’m not going to lie, I had a good cry in the car (my favorite place to cry) on the way home at the end of the weekend.
Then one of my customers sent me the photo above that he captured at the market this weekend.
I honestly thought he was just taking pictures of pretty bottles of kombucha, so the smile you see on my face is 100% genuine. A regular of mine had shown up in that moment, and the photo captured something I needed to be reminded of today.
What it looks like when I’m in my element.
Being in community with you all.
Since I started selling kombucha three summers ago, I have literally never had a negative interaction with a customer. How many people in sales can say that?!
I have the best customers, and I know it.
So thank you all for being the best Plan B I could have possibly imagined.
Without you, there is no Basil & Blossom.
With gratitude,
Devon
