Rep. Jahana Hayes recently shared on social media that the demand for food assistance in Waterbury has tripled. She attributed this to tariffs and the actions of former President Trump. However, her constituents responded with a different perspective. They pointed out that the state’s high taxes, particularly the Eversource bills that can cost as much as a mortgage payment, are the primary reasons for the food pantry crisis. They expressed frustration that the state leaders seem indifferent to the suffering of its residents. Another commenter highlighted the contrast between Hayes’s silence during the Biden administration’s higher gas prices and her current stance. Since 2019, Hayes has represented Connecticut’s 5th congressional district. In January, Connecticut’s electric rates experienced a significant increase of 29%. Furthermore, the state recently passed a budget that Republicans believe will make Connecticut the third highest-taxed state in the nation. The long lines at food pantries in Connecticut are a direct consequence of the state’s unaffordability, and Hayes’s voting record over the past decade has consistently aligned with her party’s policies that have contributed to this situation. Western Connecticut deserves better.
