Rep. Jahana Hayes recently shared on social media that the demand for food assistance in Waterbury has tripled. She attributed this to tariffs and the actions of former President Trump. However, her constituents responded with a different perspective. They pointed out that the state’s high taxes, particularly the Eversource bills that can cost as much as a mortgage payment, are the primary reasons for the food pantry crisis. They expressed frustration that the state leaders seem indifferent to the suffering of its residents. Another commenter highlighted the contrast between Hayes’s silence during the Biden administration’s higher gas prices and her current stance. Since 2019, Hayes has represented Connecticut’s 5th congressional district. In January, Connecticut’s electric rates experienced a significant increase of 29%. Furthermore, the state recently passed a budget that Republicans believe will make Connecticut the third highest-taxed state in the nation. The long lines at food pantries in Connecticut are a direct consequence of the state’s unaffordability, and Hayes’s voting record over the past decade has consistently aligned with her party’s policies that have contributed to this situation. Western Connecticut deserves better. Two weeks after Governor Lamont signed SB 397, which prohibits ICE agents from wearing masks in Connecticut, an ICE agent was caught on video making an arrest while still masked. A bystander informed the agent that Connecticut law prohibits this. The agent responded by challenging the bystander to arrest him, stating, “Tell them to arrest me. I dare you. Tell them. Who’s going to arrest me?” In response, ICE issued a formal statement affirming their refusal to comply with the law, stating, “To be crystal clear — we will not abide by this unconstitutional ban.” ICE explains that agents wear masks because public databases and online lists have been created to expose their identities to organized crime and transnational criminal organizations. They also mention that agents have faced death threats, vehicle attacks, and assaults. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has now filed a lawsuit against Connecticut over the law. Governor Lamont has stated that he will not settle the matter. A federal judge will ultimately determine who is in the right. In the meantime, Connecticut has a law that federal agents are openly defying on camera. We encourage you to share your thoughts and reactions below. 👇
