New AI models capable of reasoning are on the horizon, says

"OpenAI and Meta are on the brink of releasing new artificial intelligence models that they say will be capable of reasoning and planning, critical steps towards achieving superhuman cognition in machines. Executives at OpenAI and Meta both signalled this week that they were preparing to launch the next versions of their large language models, the systems that power generative AI applications such as ChatGPT. Meta said it would begin rolling out Llama 3 in the coming weeks, while Microsoft-backed OpenAI indicated that its next model, expected to be called GPT-5, was coming “soon”." -

"Meta Platforms Inc. is the latest social networking company to ask users to pay for account verification, joining attempts from competitors including Twitter Inc. to diversify away from ad revenue.

The new Meta Verified service for Facebook and Instagram will allow users to join celebrities and other public figures in having a blue check that confirms their identity, starting from $11.99 per month, the company said in a statement.

Meta will offer the subscriptions this week for users in Australia and New Zealand, and will include a verification process that requires a government-issued ID. In addition to a verification badge, the subscription includes “proactive account protection, access to account support, and increased visibility and reach,” a Meta spokesperson said in an email." - Bloomberg Business]

When Starbucks reopened its Seattle headquarters last week, its returning workforce found that the coffee chain’s disposable paper and plastic cups had been replaced by reusable options.

It’s a change that the company is trying to bring to the rest of its cafes worldwide, which run through roughly 7 billion disposable cups every year.

Ahead of its annual shareholder meeting on Wednesday, Starbucks unveiled the latest steps it’s taking to reduce its disposable cup use. Those include more than 20 different iterations of tests across eight markets to figure out the best ways to ditch the single-use cup.

By the end of next year, Starbucks customers will be able to use their own personal reusable cups for every Starbucks order in the United States and Canada. That includes drive-thru and mobile orders, which are currently excluded.

“We’re doing so many tests to understand how that is most convenient for our customers and won’t slow the drive-thru line down for the person behind you and is also operationally friendly for our partners,” Amelia Landers, Starbucks’ vice president of product innovation, said in an interview.” -

They're all a bit like the recently released productivity kit that focuses on understated design and quiet keys, as opposed to the usual RGB explosion Razer is known for. Most of these entries don't seem to be all that flashy, and are more about function.

The final product in the line up, the Razer Key Light Chroma is actually pretty flashy. It seems like a highly customisable studio style light for streamers. These are the lights that tend to sit in front of some streamers, pouring nicely diffused light over their set up and faces. Lighting is a particularly difficult thing to get right for streamers. "The war has both a huge human impact and is resulting in serious disruptions to supply chain and trading conditions, which is why the company groups have decided to temporarily pause IKEA operations in Russia," Brand owner Inter IKEA and store owner Ingka Group said in a joint statement on Thursday.

Inter IKEA is in charge of supply, and Ingka Group owns most IKEA stores worldwide, including all 17 in Russia.

In the year through last August, Russia was IKEA's 10th-biggest market with retail sales of 1.6 billion euros ($1.8 billion) or 4% total retail sales.

Belarus is purely a sourcing market for IKEA, it has no stores in the country." -
