Before you can shoot fish in a barrel you need a barrel.

When you advertise on Facebook you're bothering people. They're there to talk, or argue, or look at pictures of their niece. They're not there to buy stuff, especially stuff they've never heard of - so the chance of them clicking your carefully created ad and immediately buying are low.

Does this mean you shouldn't advertise on facebook?

NO! It means you need to create a market to sell to with an awareness campaign. A big splashy image that grabs the attention, like a bucket of fish.

People who have express an interest in that ad, whether that be through watching your commercial, liking your page, or reading a post (like you are now) become part of a special group of individuals that know you and what you sell and are at least somewhat interested.

Those people are much more likely to buy. Now it's time to hit them with a conversion campaign. An ad directed to your website with a 'buy now' call to action.

Think of it like this.

Awareness Campaign: Putting fish in the barrel

Conversion Campaign: Shooting fish in a barrel

Tip: Likes Matter

If you're struggling to get people to buy products with Facebook ads it could be that you're asking too much of your customers.

Remember, your product is something they weren't looking for and maybe hadn't even heard of before they saw the ad. It's hard to get someone from there to a purchase, however good your ad copy is.

However, if they've seen your product before, if they've seen their friends talking about it, or they've see your page posts, then it's a different story.

Try running a page likes campaign alongside your selling campaign.

Likes are cheaper and easier to get than sales - the likes you get will increase your reach and ensure that more people are familiar with your brand and your product. This makes them that much more likely to buy when they see your selling ad.

A truism in advertising is that a customer has to see an ad seven times before they buy. I prefer to think of it as a customer has to see a product seven times before they buy.

You can either pay to shoe your expensive selling ad 7 times for one sale, or you can get some of those product views for cheap or free. It's up to you.
