Attractive visual merchandising and functional shopping design can sometimes work against each other. A recent trip to an Upstate New York restaurant/gift shop provided great examples of authenticity, deliberate design, and some room for improvement. As researchers, we tend to find inspiration everywhere. A few retail best practices (and missteps) we spotted along the way:
- Don’t block the mirror. It’s an invitation to engage, not a place to stage merchandise.
- Touch & feel matters. Scents, textures, and tactile discovery pull shoppers deeper into the experience.
- Authenticity drives exploration. When a product feels genuinely connected to a place and its story, shoppers want to know more, and the difference is obvious the moment something feels mass-produced or synthetic instead.
