Learning about the Korean film industry:

1/ Parasite, Squid game, The Glory, Itaewon Class, and Mask girl to name a few. The South Korean entertainment industry has earned global accolades.

2/ However, creators have lived from hand to mouth, let’s say. According to the Directors Guild of Korea, its members earn on average 18m won (about 13.5K USD) a year.

3/ “They are typically hired by a production house for a one-off fee, for which they forgo rights to any future profits from their work. Only established stars of the industry can generally insist on a better deal.”

4/ With the decline of cinema and television companies, the negotiation against OTTs is getting harder from the creators’ point of view.

5/ Therefore, South Korean creators are trying to change the copyright law, to include a “right to remuneration”, but a long way to go and seemingly impossible to achieve in the short term.

6/ So the article quoted an interview that South Korean tv and cinema could “all vanish like fog”, if the creators’ pay is not increased, and then young storytellers could shift to better-paying media, such as webtoons.
