The Orangefiery team had a great time and learned a lot at the Institute for Public Relations Bridge Conference! We can confidently say this because, as part of our follow-up to the event, we followed one of the best practices of good communications measurement. As a team, we collected qualitative data and analyzed it to help us evaluate the experience.

Dr. Julie O’Niel, Assistant Professor of Strategic Communications, Texas Christian University and Director of the IPR Measurement Commission, spoke about how rich qualitative data is central to understanding the impact and outcomes of our communications. The combination of critical thinking and data from both quantitative and qualitative research is central to understanding complex phenomena like communications. Thinking about this through an evaluation lens, the quantitative or qualitative data that we gather as communicators must be consistently shaped by our established strategy and objectives and designed to measure the outcomes or impacts of our communications.

At Orangefiery, we approach data collection and analysis as a vital input to the critical thinking process we use to develop objectives and strategies for our clients and our own growth. One of the most inspiring insights from IPR for Orangefiery’s measurement nerds was the benefits of delving deep into audience segmentation to better inform message targeting.

provided many new insights into the ways communicators across academia and business are adapting to the use of generative AI.

In short, while generative AI is not here to take our communications jobs, there is one caveat: you won’t be replaced by AI, but you might be replaced by someone who knows how to use AI.

Although called artificial intelligence, the algorithm behind generative AI is not “intelligent,” and communicators need to apply their creativity to write prompts for generative AI. The partnership between communicators and AI could allow us to be clearer in our messaging and allocate more time to big-picture strategic thinking while saving time on more routine tasks. Try asking GPT-4 to identify the key messages in your most recent media coverage or to write questions a stakeholder might be asked in a crisis situation.

It’s time to get comfortable with using a new tool – so fire up those OpenAI accounts, or at least take a peek at the GPT-4 webpage to check out generative AI’s capabilities. is free to use and here to stay!
