Over and over, photographers tell me there’s nothing different about them. That there are other people who shoot like them. That their unique isn’t unique enough.
And that's true…
But not really. It's only true if you think of photography as style and nothing else.
The truth is, there are plenty of great photographers with similar styles. But what really sets them apart is what their pictures say. And the thing is, no one’s pictures say the same thing as yours. No two people will take the same pictures, even when they’re at the same place.
You push the button when you do for a reason. You position yourself where you are for a reason. You react to what’s in front of you eyes for a reason.
If you want to build value, what you really need to do is find that reason and get it out there. Do it relentlessly. Do it everywhere.
Then share it in your feed, on your blog, when you talk…you name it, share it. Photographers love to use style to differentiate themselves, but it’s the hardest way possible to build a business.
There’s too much competition. Not to mention most people don’t understand photography well enough to appreciate what you do differently. But people do understand heart and caring and commitment. They do understand stories and ideas and belief. Make sure all of these see the light of day.
Once people really see you, they pay more.
