We get in the habit of saying yes to anything. It's probably a hold-over from the lean, early days or that fear our lizard brain always comes up with: that this will be the last client ever.
In Seth Godin's Freelancer Workshop, one of the course segments is called Saying No is Generous.
While the focus was more on how it was good for us, as freelancers, I think it ends up being good for both sides.
I recently said no to a potential customer because it was not a good fit at this time. It *sounded* like he needed a new website. He kept saying the user experience on his site wasn't good (I had trouble finding how to navigate his portfolio!) but I still told him no.
Why? Everything else he said was about getting more clients, dried up prospects and little income.
He wasn't marketing - he wasn't telling people to go to his website, he wasn't sending his newsletter and kept saying "Pinterest strategy". A new website right now was not the best solution.
I referred him to a gal who does Pinterest strategy and I left it open for him to work with me. He can always come back when the time is right and hopefully with a bigger audience to launch his new website to!
What are you saying no to?
