I was very sorry to learn that photographer Duane Michals died on June 9. I think I first heard of him back in 1970 or thereabouts, and I was really taken by his imaginative series of images, particularly “Death comes to the old lady.” Death now, has come to the old photographer—Michals died at 94. He was active to the end, his interests turned largely to videos. I think I last saw him in 2024, when I took this photo of him.

The Met Gala, that annual over-the-top fashion fundraiser that brings the glitterati to the Met every May, also brings with it spectators hoping to catch a glimpse of celebrity. This year’s gala, sponsored by Jeff Bezos & wife, came under a good deal of (deserved, in my opinion) criticism because of that sponsorship, and a number of invitees chose not to attend. The area around the Met was cordoned off to a fare-thee-well, and spectators strained to catch a glimpse. Here are some spectators: a woman in an outfit with a hat fashioned after a painter’s palette—the gala theme this year is “Fashion is Art”—couldn’t get closer than 82nd Street and Madison Avenue, a long avenue block away; four models waiting impatiently for their producer to show up (I don’t know that he ever did); and spectators shading their eyes against the afternoon sun from across Fifth Avenue, hoping to catch sight even though the attendees were leaving their cars on the opposite, Met, side of the Avenue. Hope, it seems, springs eternal.

While the May Day workers' rally was going on this past Friday, New York being New York, other activities in Washington Square didn't stop. Two guys were having a discussion by the (still dry) fountain; street artist Or!el (Oriel Ceballos) was trying to sell his art in the middle of it all; and some NYU grads were trying to find a place out of the hubbub to take some pix.

Yesterday was May Day, also known as International Workers' Day, when much of the world celebrates its workers. New York City had a rally in Washington Square Park, followed by a march to Foley Square. I was at the rally, and can say the Square was packed, with people from students to older folks, with several unions represented. Photos here, and more on my archive site, with a link below, and for Instagram followers, a link in my bio. https://archive.edlefkowicz.com/gallery/May-Day-rally-in-Washington-Square-2026/G0000.xsZqZDoSX4/C00000ohpjJS92yI

Busy day at First Brooklyn Supply on Fulton Street in Crown Heights. At least the sign says "First Brooklyn Supply," but that building supply store, around the corner on Franklin Ave, seems to have closed. Was this the delivery entrance? Dunno. But it certainly looks like a scene from another place, another era.

I was at the Met on Friday, April 3, which was, of course, school vacation week. The Met was packed, so while I went through the Raphael exhibit, I can't say that I actually saw it. No matter, it's easy for me to go back. But I did see this guy in the classical scultpure court—that's him on the left, a piece of classical sculpture on the right—in what may have been the only quiet spot in the Museum.

Thousands turned out today for the 50501 protest in NY. Chanting on the library steps, followed by a march up Madison Avenue. The theme, as can be imagined, was very anti-Trump, anti-Musk, anti-DOGE, anti-ICE. There were other issues as well, as you'll see by the signs, many of which were quite creative. It was heartening to see a range of ages turn out. If you want to see more, there's a link in my bio.

I was walking through Times Square yesterday when I spotted a wedding couple being photographed on the Times Square Red Stairs. Given the wind and temperature (windy and chilly) the session was quick, and the wedding party soon decamped for their hotel. Fun while it lasted, and I caught the best of the action. And the friend of the bride caught me.

I was photographing the first day of early voting in New York for a wire service, at the Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn this morning. I got there about a half hour before the polls opened at 8, and there were a few people in line, including three women having a chat.
W1: “All politicians are corrupt.”
W2: “I know. I'm not crazy about either of them, but I'm voting for the one with no felony convictions.”
W3: “Me, too.”I was photographing the first day of early voting in New York for a wire service, at the Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn this morning. I got there about a half hour before the polls opened at 8, and there were a few people in line, including three women having a chat.
