Reach out to critics and music writers 😌

As much as people like to poke fun at music critics for being too self-serious, a lot of them exert serious influence over which artists and albums get the time of day.

For example, Anthony Fantano publishes tons of album reviews on his YouTube channel, theneedledrop. Earlier this year, he eclipsed 1.5 million subscribers. The visibility an artist gets following one of Fantano’s reviews is immense.

It may not be realistic for your band to get featured on such a popular channel. Regardless, you should email bloggers and magazine writers and ask them to review your latest material. In the same vein as opening for bigger artists, getting reviewed on a reputable website will undoubtedly direct music fans to your streaming profiles.

Plus, if the writers are kind enough to link to your website, those blog posts you’ve been writing will inch higher and higher up the Google search results.

Can you imagine your life without music? It’s almost impossible.

Whether we are cruising in the car headed to the beach on a hot summer day or listening to muzak at a doctor’s office, we are constantly surrounded by song. Makeups, breakups, parties, hanging out with friends, singing along with our kids, or caroling a
Christmas tune — music stamps nearly every aspect of our life 🤟

Much in the way a killer soundtrack accompanies a movie, most of us have songs that accent each phase of our lives, melodies that instantly bring us back to specific moments or memories when we hear them even years later.

Short-form videos are already a HUGE part of most social media marketing plans 😌

Since TikTok has blown up, people love how easy it is to create videos and add creative twists to them.

However, TikTok is mostly popular amongst millennials and Gen-Zers, so Instagram’s newest “Reels” feature is one that the older demographic would probably be interested in ✨

Since users probably already have an Instagram account, they won’t have to download a separate app like TikTok to create their videos.

If there’s one thing that beats live music, it’s free live music.

Of course, from an opportunity cost perspective, it’s expensive to give up a night that you could be using to make money from a regular concert. However, if you have the flexibility to occasionally play free shows in parks, town commons, and coffee houses, it can be a fantastic way to get your music out there and find new fans 🤩

Plus, in an era when ticket vendors charge exorbitant fees for no apparent reason other than turning a profit, putting your music out for free is a surefire way to brand yourself as a cool, down-to-earth artist.

If you’re making music, it’s not unlikely that you’re a fan who has his or her favorite online resources for new music. Blogs and online magazines that cover music can be a great way of getting new eyes and ears on your tunes. As mentioned above, you can get started on these efforts early in your music career without paying for a publicist – it just takes some work👌

Start by putting time aside for research – lots of it. Scour every corner of the internet for blogs and other sites that like to cover the kind of music you make (and make sure the sites are regularly updated, too). While they may not make it easy, you should be able to find general contact information – or, in some cases, specific “Submission Guidelines” – somewhere on the site.

Build yourself a robust media list, and where you can, try to find specific writers who seem to be fans of your genre (one tip is locating writers who have covered artists that you’d compare your style to – that way you also have a reference point in the introductory email) – sending them the EPK you learned about above will help them learn more about you✨

Remember: it’s important not to get to discouraged or distressed when you begin pitching to writers and music sites. If you’re not getting responses, follow up once – but respect the inboxes of who you’re pitching to, and don’t take it personally.

Surround yourself with a strong team 🙌🏻

You might prefer the lone-wolf approach to promoting your music, but there can be huge benefits to surrounding yourself with a great team of like-minded people. If you have a team of well-connected individuals who are passionate about your music all working in your interest, it stands to reason that your chances of success will increase.

If you can put together a team of friends who’ll help you free of charge, or for a cut of eventual earnings – great! But sometime, you’ll need to acquire the services of professionals to help give you the edge in the competitive music market. Whether that’s a PR person, a radio plugger or promoter/booker, there's nothing wrong with accepting help.

It’s also a good idea to get yourself of a great manager. Again, make sure they’re passionate about your music and believe in you as an artist. A manager who’ll go above and beyond for you is worth their weight in gold.

Build a network to market your music 🎶

Making the right connections can go a long way in your quest for recognition. However, you can’t just wait for those connections to come about organically. You need to put yourself out there and make it happen through networking.

Again, I’m not a world-famous musician, but I’ve done a lot of networking in my time. Here are some key tips on how to network effectively:

☑️ Reach out via social: Find people who work in the right parts of the music business, track them down on social media, and connect with them. When you reach out, don’t immediately ask them to sign or book you. Strike up a conversation. Tell them you love their venue or work, ask them for advice, or contribute to their online conversations.

☑️ Get face time: Simply put, be as active in your local community as possible. Play all the shows and open mics you can, attend workshops and conferences, and hang out at venues that book many local artists.

☑️ Adopt a networking mindset: Every conversation can be an opportunity to network. You could be speaking to a local singer who wants to join forces for a few shows or someone at a charity that’s organizing a festival. Get used to carrying business cards and maybe even demo CDs, USB sticks, or download cards.

☑️ Follow up: In sales, 80 percent of non-routine deals take at least five follow-ups to close. Music is likely no different. If you don’t make an effort to restart stalled conversations, don’t expect to see results through networking.
