The Island-wide vote on the MV high school addition-renovation is next Tuesday, June 2nd – Your YES vote on this critical project matters!
This plan is the most cost effective way to meet the needs of the community. It is what is required to deliver a fully functional school building, address critical space deficiencies, and bring our regional high school into compliance. There are no frivolous expenditures or bells and whistles.
I was a Volunteer for the Tisbury School Campaign and know, first hand - that EVERY VOTE COUNTS. The failed vote for the Tisbury School cost taxpayers millions and kids and educators years of access to a healthy vibrant school.
WHY VOTE YES for MVRHS?
The current school is NOT repairable any longer. The 67-year-old school’s needs are so extensive, continuing to repair the building is no longer feasible. The central air, mold, asbestos, and mechanical failures must be fixed now.
Use it or lose it: $77 million in state funding. Approving the project unlocks a $77 million reimbursement from the Massachusetts School Building Authority.
NO WILL COST MORE
Voting no will cost us more — and get us less. If the project is voted down on June 2nd, the Island will lose these funds – and be stuck funding the entire project ourselves, at an even higher overall cost as construction costs continue to rise (see Tisbury School).
There is no viable alternative plan or approach. Attempting to rehabilitate the current building will put students (Moses, his peers, and their teachers) in trailers for years, cost upwards of $200 million, and still not get us what we need to comply with educational requirements.
THE TEAM BEHIND MVRHS PLAN has done their work. A diverse committee of 25 Island representatives, parents, educators, school building experienced contractors and consultants and our kids have studied, weighed, cut, stretched, and gave real time and energy to producing the best project they could. Now is not the time to go back to the drawing board.
