Why you don’t need expensive market research?

Market research is separate from a business's brand because it’s tied to an outside source. When you hand over your direction-setting power to others, you lose the ability to stand on your own.

↳In branding, choosing someone else's path is rarely the path to distinctiveness.

I am not alone in my thinking:

↳Steve Jobs famously stated: “It's really hard to design products by focus groups. A lot of times, people don't know what they want until you show it to them.

↳ Henry Ford famously stated: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.”

I’m not saying not to do any research.

I do research in the service of strategy: I research you and your business and industry. I do competitive landscape analysis, positioning research, and more depending on scope. I also stay informed of design and brand trends so that I can apply them depending on your goals and the strategy for your brand or avoid those like the plague — I’m thinking of all those identical service brands right now )🫤.

So yes research the market, find a gap, and claim it for yourself.
↳ But you don’t worry that you’re not paying big bucks for market research to do it. 🤷‍♀️

Think “I ❤️” Lucy was just a title of a TV show that came out of thin air?

Think again.
….

In the 1950’s Lucille Ball was a powerful business woman and the comedic genius, who pioneered the industry and changed the history of television forever when she dreamt, conceived, birthed and nurtured “ I ❤️ Lucy. ”

Lucille ran Desilu as President and Chief Executive Officer while at the same time, starring in her own series . That meant being a creative and a boss/in-between scenes, she had to sign contracts or initial labor agreements, stand up to powerful men shareholders, stand up for herself, her husband, the other actors, writers, the scripts, the directors, the camera men, and even literary stand up for the right to use the best camera for the show itself.

So it’s no surprise that I think the best business and life advise you may ever hear this
comes from, Lucille Ball.

I revisited a jingle I created for a client in 2013 to illustrate the power of sound in branding.

Melissa Tswana, a real estate agent facing stiff competition in NYC, needed to stand out.

Back when social media was limited to platforms like YouTube and Facebook, I positioned her as a neighborhood expert.

Using her initials "MT" to craft the tagline "My Town, Feel Right at Home" for her brand.

With a modest budget 💵💵 , strategic positioning 💁🏾‍♀️, and creative strategy💡, I developed a memorable jingle to represent her brand and connect with her audience's desire to find just the right neighborhood to feel at home in.

THE RESULT: An exclusive, unique, and distinctive brand asset to future-proof her communication and identity! 🙌

The brand experiences are playing a bigger and bigger role in today's brands. ( if I could do it over, I would shorten the video, but you stay to the end to hear the jingle).

Times have changed since then, and tech is at everyone's fingertips….
