Today we’re attending the annual Battle of Brooklyn commemoration at The The Green-Wood Cemetery! It’s a free, all-ages event remembering a pivotal Revolutionary War battle right here in Brooklyn, and exploring the meaning of freedom through hands-on activities, music, and history. We’ve been:
* Meeting costumed interpreters from all walks of life, including soldiers from the 1st Rhode Island Regiment (one of the first racially integrated units!)
* Learning about Indigenous life and resilience thanks to Lefferts Historic House
* Doing colonial crafts, spy games, 18th-century laundry, and playing with Dutch toys
* Hearing music, marching to Battle Hill, and enjoying a rare picnic on the beautiful meadows
This event is a powerful reminder of the diverse people who shaped New York’s story—colonists, British, African, Indigenous, and others. Thanks to The Green-Wood Cemetery, Lefferts House, Lott House, Center for Brooklyn History, Old Stone House, and more for making history accessible and fun! If you’re nearby, stop by before 1pm!
