Sometimes brand strategy is about exercising restraint. Our Director of Research and Strategy, Dr. Zafer KILIC, recently shared his thoughts on why less is more:

“I was heading into the library at Yale University to spend some time reading when I ran into a group and ended up having an unexpected conversation about marketing and brands.

At some point, we started talking about how brands are constantly trying to say more. More features. More messages. More content. More campaigns.

And I shared something I strongly believe: Strong brands often know what not to say.

Good marketing strategy isn’t always about adding another message. Sometimes, it’s about removing what doesn’t need to be there. You don’t need to explain everything to earn a place in someone’s mind. You need to communicate the right thing clearly and consistently enough to be remembered.

Funny how a quick conversation on the way to the library can turn into a reminder about one of the simplest and hardest parts of brand strategy: Knowing what to leave out.”

For designers looking to re-enter the job market, knowing where to direct your energy is one of the biggest challenges. Our Art Director Hugo Manhani recently had a conversation about exactly that, and his advice is worth sharing:

“A friend of mine asked for advice on how to get back into the UI/UX job market. He wanted to keep his skills sharp, and he was torn between two approaches: grinding through coursework for months before applying, or just diving in and applying for positions while trying to learn along the way.

I told him to take the middle ground. Instead of just studying theory in a vacuum, treat it like you already landed a job, and they just handed you a task:

Pick one flow from a real website, figure out what’s not working or what could be better, and then redesign it.

Throw it in Figma, make it tangible. Create something you can show off and defend.

You’ll learn the fundamentals better by doing the actual work. If you spend all your time blindly studying, there’s a good chance that half of what you learn won’t end up being relevant to your work.”

At Y&C, we write a lot of creative briefs, so we spend a lot of time thinking about how to make them better. What separates a good brief from a great one? That’s the question we asked Lisa Chong in our recent Q&A. Now we want to know what you think.

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. This is both a day of pride and an opportunity to reflect on how far we’ve come in the fight for human rights and recommit ourselves to building a more inclusive and equitable future for everyone.

Swipe through for a brief look at the history that led to this day. 👇

Happy National Billboard Day 🎉

Here are a few interesting facts you may not know about this iconic and enduring form of advertising:

The earliest known billboards were hieroglyphic stone carvings from ancient Egypt used for propaganda, circa 3250 B.C.

In 1993, Space Marketing Inc. announced their plan to launch a billboard into space, but it was cancelled due to a lack of funding and public outcry

The world's largest billboard was a Ford ad on the Edificio España in Madrid, measuring 5,265 square metres (the size of 20 tennis courts)

There's something to be said for an ad format that's been turning heads for millennia. Here’s a look back at some of our favourite OOH creative we’ve worked on over the years.

Creative minds cannot be confined to office hours. For the past year, three of our team members have been quietly building an indie game studio in their spare time. Now the quiet part is over.

i84 Interactive Entertainment is the brainchild of Derek Traver, Tom Gabrysiak, and Dave Ho. Much like York & Chapel, the studio’s name is a reference to geography, the Northeast Interstate 84 highway that runs from Pennsylvania to Connecticut and is a frequent route of travel for the company’s founders. The inspiration for i84 came in part from the founders’ experience at Y&C working on gamification and VR applications. The company’s goal is to explore niche, unexpected, and unexplored territory in the gaming world.

In March, i84 launched its first game, Cursed Echoes, a VR psychological horror game in the sub-genre of anomaly detection. Lead developer Derek said, “We wanted to create a VR experience that not only felt tense and immersive, but also pushed the limits of visual fidelity.” Added Tom, “On a screen, you watch the monster. In VR, you share a room with it. It’s a whole different ballgame!”

Cursed Echoes is available now on the Meta Store for the Meta Quest 2, 3, and 3S. Check it out at cursedechoes.com
