Fire pits and s’mores ingredients were essential ingredients for last summer’s outdoor social distanced gatherings.
Perhaps that shift in consumer behavior became a call to action for a Jet Puffed marshmallow brand manager.

In 2020-2021 a category that has required very little innovation or marketing spend for years had an opportunity to create new product and even TV, Digital and eCommerce retail campaigns for their new launch: a marshmallow for s’mores with the chocolate inside!
In the process, they created a new price point in their line, possibly opening the door to future for product innovation and extensions, and a TV campaign that has likely had a halo effect on their standard marshmallows.

The Stuffed Puffs case is a great example for new brand managers who will be faced with similar decisions in their career. Do you:
A) Choose to ride the wave of your cash cow ($1.99/bag) with no marketing spend required and predictable seasonality to deliver consistent sales and revenue?

Or

B: Choose to innovate in your category at $3.99/bag factoring in new costs such as R&D, advertising production, media, and TV/digital/Ecom marketing campaigns, but potentially unlock a new opportunity for your brand?

Which path would you choose?
What are the risks/rewards?
Does the marketing math work out?

Spotted at Shaw's market: Summer's not over yet even though we're full into Back to School, Halloween and (gasp!) Christmas merchandising!

I've been fascinated this year by something I'm calling "In-betweasonal" merchandising. AKA Fun, new sets that serve as pulse points for incremental sales in between the big holidays - in this case in between Fourth of July and Fall/Halloween. A nostalgic experience by the checklanes that evokes memories summer vacations by the sea and the thrill of picking your own flavors of salt water taffy. Or - if your summer vacation was cancelled this year - you can still bring some home!
