🎵🎨 Meet Your Neighbors: The Manzellas 🎨🎵
Danny and Cheryl Manzella are celebrating their 60th birthdays this year, and their North Tonawanda home on Orchard is at the heart of their story. They found their perfect house in 2012, drawn to the canal walking trail and those beautiful 10-minute drives to catch sunsets by the river.
Their love story started with a blind date arranged by Danny's neighbor back in the early nineties. That first night at a backyard barbecue, they talked and sang by the bonfire until 8am the next morning! They married at Mayor's Park on September 5, 1998, and have been making music and memories together ever since.
Danny has become a well-known voice in the local music scene - he was the founding singer of 55 Main for a decade, performed Wednesday nights at Gateway Harbor with Eminence Front and Company, and now sings for the JT Baker Band. His music even made it to Amazon Prime in the film "Good Times Never Come," with scenes shot right here at Gratwick Park! Cheryl captures it all through her photography, selling calendars at Market in the Square (still "Budwey's" to her!) featuring local scenes and those gorgeous NT sunsets.
Their 26-year-old son Joe shares the family's creative spirit - he's an incredible artist, hockey enthusiast, and even creates original card games for family game nights. And let's not forget their four cats: rescue brothers Jack and Ozzy (who fetch like dogs!), Tesla, and formerly feral Knee High, who ran into their house two years ago and decided to stay.
You've probably seen Danny perform at Porchfest every year since it started. The Manzellas live by their motto: faith, hope, and love - and they're grateful for neighbors who help care for our community and its feral cats.
Here's to families who make North Tonawanda feel like home! 💚

From High School Sweethearts to Vegas and Back Home Again 💙

Gary and Danah Rosenau's love story started on a 9th grade class trip to DC and has truly come full circle. After dating through high school, they spent 11 years apart living separate lives before finding their way back to each other. Danah moved to Vegas in 2010, and they married in their backyard two years later, proving that some connections are meant to be.

After graduating from NTHS in 1991, Gary built an impressive 30-year career in the Las Vegas resort industry, working everywhere from the Luxor's opening to the Bellagio to Mandalay Bay. But he never stopped being a proud North Tonawanda kid and Bills fan at heart.

Now back home in the house where he grew up (right between Deerwood Golf Course and the Erie Canal), Gary has discovered an unexpected passion: woodworking. His business, Cave 2 Castle Custom Woodcraft Creations, specializes in custom wood engravings for pet memorial plaques, charcuterie boards, lamps, and more.

He reclaims about 95% of his wood, believing that "all wood, like humans, has flaws and beauty waiting to be found."

His shop door is always open to neighbors and anyone looking for something special or just wanting to chat. It's a perfect example of what makes our North Tonawanda community so great! 🪵✨

From North Tonawanda to the Most Haunted House in America 👻
North Tonawanda native Daniel Klaes has taken an incredible journey from local music promoter to one of the country's leading paranormal investigators.
After working in Buffalo's music scene and co-owning The Icon venue, Daniel moved back to his childhood home in North Tonawanda to raise his family. That's when things got strange—unexplained sounds, moving objects, apparitions, and doors opening on their own. A psychic revealed two child spirits in the home, and Daniel discovered an old painting in the attic that seemed connected to the activity.
This experience launched him into serious paranormal research. In 2012, he co-founded the Greater Western New York Paranormal Society and started the YouTube series "Behind the Shadows," which has gained over a million views.
Then in 2015, Daniel made a bold move—he purchased the infamous Hinsdale House, one of America's most haunted locations. Built in 1853 and site of a documented exorcism, the house is now a center for paranormal research, attracting investigators worldwide.
Today, Daniel has appeared on shows like Paranormal Lockdown and America's Most Terrifying Places, serves as Executive Producer of The Ghost Finders series, and oversees the international show Death Walker with Nick Groff. He's also authored "Hinsdale House: An American Haunting" and speaks at conventions globally.
What started as childhood mysteries has become an extraordinary career bridging the gap between skeptics and believers. Sometimes the most unexpected paths lead to the most amazing destinations! 🏚️✨

🎉 One Year of North Tonawanda Neighbors - What a Journey! 🎉
As I look back on this incredible first year, three words come to mind: grace, gratitude, and redemption. What started as a simple publication idea has become so much more, thanks to the warmth and genuine spirit of our amazing community.
From day one, I've been struck by the genuine care and pride our business owners have for North Tonawanda. I've met entrepreneurs, artists, and nonprofit leaders all deeply invested in making our community better. We're all Lumberjacks! 🪓
The connections I've made at the NT City Market have completely transformed how I eat and shop. This journey has been deeply personal - this community has shown me the incredible power of second chances and never giving up.
The momentum we've built together is just the beginning! I'm excited about the new businesses we'll discover, the stories we've yet to tell, and the relationships we'll continue to build. Together, we're building a stronger community, one connection at a time.
Thank you, North Tonawanda, for this incredible first year! 💙

🐕☀️ Important Read for Dog Parents!
We're still in the "dog days of summer" with some hot weather hanging around! Don't let your guard down when it comes to keeping your furry friends safe in the heat.
Check out this fantastic expert article by Jessica Fritschi LVT, CDBC, CNWI, CPDT-KA from The Noble Beast Dog Training featured in this month's North Tonawanda Neighbors magazine! Jessica breaks down everything new dog owners need to know about heat safety, including:
🚨 Critical warning signs of heatstroke - Heavy panting, excessive drooling, bright red gums, lethargy, and more serious symptoms that require immediate vet attention
🚗 The deadly truth about hot cars - Did you know that on an 80°F day, your car can reach over 100°F in just 10 minutes, even with windows cracked?
🐾 Breed-specific risks - Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and other flat-faced breeds are especially vulnerable due to their compressed airways
🌡️ The "hand test" for hot pavement - If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws!
Jessica also shares practical cooling tips like kiddie pools, cooling mats, and the importance of morning/evening walks. Plus, she explains why you should never shave double-coated breeds like Huskies - their fur actually protects them!
Remember: if you're hot, your dog probably is too. Let's keep our four-legged family members safe during these dog days!

Two-Ingredient Peach Sherbet

By Jessica Bennett, MS, RD, CDN, IFNCP
August 22 celebrates both Eat A Peach Day and World Plant Milk Day - perfect for this simple two-ingredient dessert. Blend frozen peaches with just enough plant milk until you reach ice cream consistency. Use frozen peaches and minimal liquid to avoid creating soup instead of sherbet.
Required ingredients:
• Frozen Peaches
• Plant Milk
Optional ingredients:
• Frozen avocado or banana for creaminess
• Maple syrup for sweetness
• Vegan vanilla protein powder
• Vanilla extract or cinnamon
Optional toppings:
• Nuts, fresh fruit, honey drizzle, or vegan whipped cream
Why plant milk? Many people avoid dairy due to allergies, lactose intolerance (affecting half the world's population), or ethical concerns. Plant milks like soy, almond, oat, and coconut help people enjoy diverse recipes regardless of dietary restrictions.

Something beautiful is happening in our community.
Every Friday, some of our North Tonawanda children head home knowing the meals that sustained them all week are about to disappear. The weekend becomes hours of uncertainty and hunger.
Box of Hope: Nourishment for Learning was born from neighbors who couldn't ignore this quiet crisis.
This isn't your typical food program. Yes, they provide weekend meal kits to students facing food insecurity. But what sets Box of Hope apart is their belief that real change happens through real relationships. They connect sponsors directly with families, creating space for genuine friendships to grow.
School professionals help identify families with the greatest need. Churches, businesses, and civic groups have joined forces. Every donation dollar goes straight to food and expanding their reach.
The vision is simple yet profound: model for the next generation how neighbors truly support one another.
This is North Tonawanda at its best—recognizing that when we invest in relationships, not just resources, we create lasting change that strengthens everyone.

🥋 Spotlight on Master Biesik’s Martial Arts - Building Confidence & Character! 🥋

Right here in the heart of North Tonawanda, something special has been happening since 2017. Master Brian Biesik didn't just open a martial arts school - he created a place where our community comes together to grow, connect, and transform.
What started as Master Biesik's personal journey at age 15 has blossomed into something much bigger. After 25+ years of training, he realized martial arts isn't just about punches and kicks - it's about building confidence, focus, discipline, and respect. As a father of six incredible kids, he brings that same family dedication to every student who walks through his doors.
What makes this place special?
✨ Family-friendly environment welcoming ALL ages and experience levels
✨ Focus on shaping strong, respectful, well-rounded human beings
✨ Deep community involvement - you'll see them at local events, school field days, and health fairs
✨ A true "family" atmosphere where students support each other on and off the mats
Whether you're looking to boost confidence, improve focus, find belonging, or just need a positive outlet - Master Biesik's has a place for you. The door is always open for anyone curious to learn more, schedule a self-defense class, or simply drop by to say hello.
The journey starts on the mat, but the impact reaches far beyond. 💪

🚨 Spotlight on Our Hometown Hero: Fire Chief Doug Orlowski 🚨
What an inspiring feature in North Tonawanda Neighbors! From volunteer firefighter in 1999 to Fire Chief this past January, Doug's 25+ year journey of service to our community is remarkable. A NT High School grad ('96) who chose to build his career right here at home! 💙
Doug's impact goes way beyond the fire department - coaching Little League for seven years, helping with NT Drama Club sets, and completing marathons while raising eight incredible kids with wife Adrienne. From Isabella starring in school musicals to Richie (former valedictorian!) at Syracuse University, this family represents the very best of our community spirit.
Their family motto says it all: "Always be your best you and make good choices."
Thank you, Chief Orlowski family, for showing us what dedication and community pride look like every day. North Tonawanda is lucky to have you! 🔥❤️
