Spring is in full swing here at The Meridian Weekly, and so are our communities. This week’s edition is packed with hometown pride, from the Elsie Dairy Festival Pageant candidates gracing our front page to Laingsburg’s Red Thunder Robotics wrapping up a historic season at the World Championship in Houston. We also have full coverage of Memorial Day remembrances across Ovid, Elsie, and Greenbush, plus heartwarming stories like Ashley Middle School students delivering succulents to local nursing home residents. It is the kind of small town goodness that makes our job a joy.

Sports fans will want to turn straight to our pages. The Wolfpack baseball and softball teams are red hot heading into postseason play, Ovid-Elsie track athletes shattered records on their way to State Finals, and Laingsburg’s girls’ soccer team gave Bath everything they had in a dramatic District matchup. We are also celebrating the 43rd annual Laingsburg Springtime Festival (huge congrats to raffle winner Richard Cook), sharing important public notices on the Elsie Dam project and local millage proposals, and remembering beloved community members in our obituaries. As always, thank you for making The Meridian Weekly part of your week, online and in your mailbox.

A bittersweet week here at The Meridian Weekly , we’re closing a chapter on three generations of home delivery. Art, Dan, Beau, and Mike Price have been the backbone of our carrier service since the early ’90s, but beginning in June, we’re returning to postal delivery. We couldn’t be more grateful to the Price family, Tom Turek, and every carrier who’s rolled out thousands of papers through rain, snow, and sunshine. (Maybe now Art can finally sneak in more fishing and golf!)

Elsewhere in this packed May 24th edition: we celebrate the Ovid-Elsie girls’ soccer team clinching their sixth straight conference championship, Laingsburg’s Tami Skok heading to the Transplant Games on her 10-year “kidney-versary,” and beautiful Memorial Day service listings across Ovid, Laingsburg, Elsie, and Greenbush. Plus, we honor local graduates, share rhubarb fundraisers, library summer reading kickoffs, and heartfelt obituaries. As always — thank you for growing up with us, weekly, for 35 years.

This week’s edition is bursting with graduation pride and community celebration! We’re thrilled to feature the Laingsburg High School Class of 2026 — including co-valedictorians Hazel Burley, Cody Catalane, Carter Klont, Bella Latuszek, Evan Lefevre, Hannah Rathka, and Waylon Rowley — as well as the full Ovid-Elsie graduating class (see page 19). Meanwhile, Shannon and Troy Graham have been named Parade Marshals for the 43rd Laingsburg Springtime Festival happening May 21-25, with a full schedule of carnival rides, arts & crafts, co****le tournament, live music, and a raffle for a custom golf cart. Don’t miss the festival pull-out section on pages 9-11!

Elsewhere, the Elsie Village Council held a public hearing on a proposed $9.23 million water improvement project to address aging infrastructure from the 1930s, the Ovid-Elsie girls tennis team captured the MMAC championship, and the Ovid-Elsie football team continued its annual tradition of cleaning up the CIS Rail Trail. We also said goodbye to several beloved community members, including Mary Louise Miller (98) and Mary Catherine Fox (95). And as always, Crystal Mitchell shares her gardening adventures — this week, she’s hunting for horse liniment after digging up snowball bushes. Congratulations to all our graduates, and enjoy the Springtime Festival!

This week’s edition celebrates some amazing young athletes! We’re thrilled to feature seven Laingsburg senior athletes who signed their letters of intent to compete at the collegiate level — including Savvy Stirm (Northwood softball), Izabella Latuszek (Lansing Community College softball), and Madison Phillips (Davenport track & field). Meanwhile, the City of Ovid has hired Joe Wade, a Navy veteran and retired firefighter, as its new Zoning Administrator and part-time Code Enforcer. And if you’re looking for a fun photo op, check out our story on the new Laingsburg Selfie & Photography Studio — nine curated backgrounds for just $25 a day!

We also said goodbye to several beloved community members, including Gary Eyer and Mary Louise Howard, and shared lovely “thank you” notes from the families of Doug Long and Shirley Long. On the sports front, Ovid-Elsie’s girls soccer team clinched at least a share of the MMAC title with an 8-0 Senior Night win, and Laingsburg’s softball squad continues to dominate, now ranked sixth in Division 3. Plus, Crystal Mitchell is back with her delightful column on daybeds, kittens in the cabbage patch, and the hunt for the perfect mower deck. As always, thank you for supporting your hometown paper — and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!
