Why is there a wire "jumping" over my water meter? 🤔💧⚡
Have you ever looked at your water meter and noticed a copper wire clamping onto the pipe on one side, looping over the meter, and clamping onto the other side?
It looks weird, but that little wire (called a bonding jumper) is one of the most important safety devices in your home. Here is why it’s critical:
🚧 The Problem: The Broken Road
Your home’s electrical system needs a safe path to the ground to get rid of dangerous stray voltage. Historically, your metal water main was that "highway" to safety.
• However: Your water meter often sits right in the middle of that highway.
• The Catch: Many meters have rubber gaskets or plastic parts inside that stop electricity.
• If you don't have that jumper wire, the meter acts like a broken bridge. The safe path stops right there.
🌉 The Solution: Building the Bridge
Bonding both sides of the meter acts like a bridge over that gap. It ensures that if stray electricity gets into your pipes, it doesn't get stuck inside your house—it flows safely out to the earth.
⚡ Why It Matters to YOU
If that bridge is missing (or if a plumber removes the meter to change it), and there is a fault in your system, your sink, shower, or appliances could become energized.
• Without the wire: If you touch the faucet, YOU become the bridge. 🚫
• With the wire: The electricity bypasses you and goes into the ground.
Don't let your plumbing become a shock hazard. If you are upgrading your service or aren't sure if your grounding is up to code, give us a call. We keep the path to safety wide open.
