In the midst of 2020, as we sheltered at home, disconnected from our friends and loved ones, we received a divine phone call from two of our producers on CONCRETE COWBOY. And we don't use the word divine lightly. They shared with us about meeting a woman named Erin, whose brother, Daniel, started making a film about his life at age 10 when he had a premonition he would die young. And on his deathbed, he prophetically proclaimed that a team of filmmakers would help him finish it. And it was his last wish that she find them.
So we had Erin send nearly 1,400 hours of tapes. And we hit play. And what we discovered was a boy who lived life with intense hope, curiosity, and wonder. Before the age of thirty he travelled to over 40 countries, capturing unparalleled intimacy in his relationships, taping vulnerable confessions of fear and failure and love and loss, and ultimately weaving together a dynamic hero's journey as he attempted to rewrite the ending of his life.
Working alongside producers Adam McKay, Kevin Messick, Jeff Waxman, and Jen Madeloff we took our pitch to HBO to partner with us in finishing the final chapter of Daniel's story. A huge shout out to our Editors, Jon Connor and Christina Valdivieso, who combed through every minute of Daniel's footage. And a massive thank you to Erin Northcott for trusting us to finish her brother's film.
