It's the saddest day. I learned about the passing of my colleague in music and friend Ghenady Meirson after a battle with cancer. Ghena's life was Music, and without doubt, he was the biggest advocate of Russian Opera not just in the Philadelphia's Curtis and AVA scene, but probably in America. Students flocked to study their roles with him from all over the world.
I will never forget those busy days as we were working so hard together to start and promote his project Russian Opera Workshop. Thanks to his creative talented mind, he was able to create a great supportive team, including both of his children. The workshop turned out to be great success and became a beloved Philly summer tradition at AVA.
I will never forget those "orchestra hands" of Ghena. And singing in the workshop's volunteer choir as we rehearsed and performed in his rendition of Rachmaninov's Aleco and Tchaikovsky's The Maid of Orleans. I will never forget those concerts of Russian Romance songs he organized at AVA every December, an event worth waiting for, year after year...
