The Hebrew scriptures say "As arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children born in one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them."
I took that proverb to heart.
I had 4 kids before I was 30.
I raised them with the intention that they would become difference makers in our culture.
The single most powerful means we have as men to effect our culture is to raise children who share our values and - more important - train them to do the same with their children.
We must raise adults with character and a shared vision for a better future.
Without character, the vision will become a nightmare,
Without vision, there is no reason to develop character.
Character is forged in fire and sharpened with iron. It is not sprouted in a hothouse under carefully controlled conditions.
Vision is passed from generation to generation through shared stories.
We in the West abandoned our stories, our shared myths. We no longer know who we are. So, character development seems to be nothing but pointless hardship.
It is time we fanned the dying embers of our shared myths in the hearts of our offspring.
Treat your children as arrows aimed at the heart of darkness.
This is generational work.
