Marketing my own business is genuinely hard for me. Even though I have the skillset. And I know I’m not the only one.

I realized that most small business owners feel the same anxiety but without the background to help them push through the fear and make good longterm decisions. And that's a problem if you want your small business to succeed for a long time: Long-term strategic decisions don't get made out of fear. Survival decisions do, and those are short-term solutions not long-term strategies.

That's why I decided to accept that maybe, possibly, my real skill is being the marketer for small business owners who hate the idea of marketing. The discomfort of promoting yourself and your services. The icky feeling a job seeker gets when crafting a résumé that highlights all their accolades while also hitting the right keywords.

Even though I don't enjoy these activities for my own purposes, I find it so easy to do them for others. Funny how that works, huh? So, I decided to lean in. Stop fighting it. And to be honest that it’s hard for me, too. I’ve just had a lot of practice to get me to do the hard thing.

Happy International Workers Day.

May 1, 1886 is the date that workers nationwide went on strike to demand the 8-hour workday. Today, May 1, 2026, people are boycotting work, school, and shopping to protest the heavy influence of billionaires over the US government. And over 2,000 years ago, ancient Germanic people danced around maypoles to help bring a bountiful harvest. While modern protesting doesn't seem as cheery as a Maypole dance, I find the core theme of community and camaraderie to be a meaningful connection.

Maypole ribbons are woven together by dancers moving in community, creating intricate and beautiful designs that no single person could make alone.

I think about our society that way. Whether you're in the trades, behind a desk, or have branched out on your own, your story—both struggles and triumphs—is part of a larger pattern that we're all weaving together.

The workforce is evolving faster than most of us can process, while the cost of living increases seemingly even faster. Navigating long work hours, personal responsibilities, uncertainty, and the existentialism of it all is nearly impossible to do without community.

Today I'm encouraging everyone to listen more. To the person in a role different from yours. To the entrepreneur who looks confident but is figuring it out as they go. To the worker who loves their job and the one who doesn't. Whether you are protesting or not, I think we're all feeling the pressure and hoping for more equitable living for everyone.
We are all necessary. We all have something to teach each other.

I never use clickbait, ragebait, or AI slop to lure my target audience. So why are you?
I'm not sure. Maybe it works for some. Maybe they're lacking the creativity, EQ, or integrity to focus on strategies that actually build trust. Happy Earth Day!

Today I like to spend time thinking about what I can do to be a better friend to Mother Earth. Whether that's reducing the amount of plastic I bring into the home, finding products that are made in sustainable ways, or creative ways to recycle, every act brings me a little bit of joy.

It's something I think about at work too, making sure K-Star Communications operates as intentionally as I try to live. I try to be considerate about the tools I use, the resources I consume, and the impact that has on my clients and on the planet.
