BIRD 51: The Evidence.

She thinks I’m just staring at the wall. She doesn’t see the patterns.

The vultures? Distractions. The pigeons? Low-level surveillance. The ones that glow and hover at 3:00 AM? That’s where the real story begins.

I’ve connected the dots. The flight paths over the backyard aren't random. They know about the squirrel cache. They know about the back porch perimeter.

The truth is up there. And I’m the only one with the clearance to bark at it.

New model. Bigger than the vultures. Quieter. Glows a bit more than I’d like.

She calls it an "unidentified aerial phenomenon." I call it a very large, very shiny bird that needs to keep it moving.

I don't care if you've traveled light-years to be here. My air space doesn't care about your propulsion system. If it’s above the fence, it's under my jurisdiction.

They can hover all they want, but I’m not clocking out until the sky is clear of intruders—local or otherwise.

Old man injury alert.

I had a situation. On my paw. I handled it privately and responsibly for several days and I do not feel that deserves the reaction it is currently getting.

She found it.

I don't know how. I kept my weight even. I did not limp. I did not lick it in front of her. I was extremely professional about the whole thing.

She found it anyway.

There was cleaning. There was examining. There were words. Not loud words — she doesn't do loud — but the quiet serious kind. Which is worse.

The paw has been doctored. I am fine.

I am also currently in the other room.

I know what I did. I am choosing to process this privately.

Today, our older sister Lola Jo crossed the Rainbow Bridge. 🌈🐾

Even though she spent the last nine years with another family, she was always part of our story. Mom never stopped loving her or wishing the best for her.

Long before Sabre and Zeke came along, there was Lola.

She came into Mom’s life on one of the hardest days she had ever faced. The same day Orion crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Lola arrived and jumped straight into her arms, as if she knew a friend was needed.

When Mom moved to Arizona years later, breed restrictions meant Lola couldn’t go with her. It was a heartbreaking decision, but she was placed with a family who loved her, and she spent nearly fifteen wonderful years being cherished.

Today, that journey came to an end.

We know there was a happy reunion waiting for her. Maybe Orion was the first one she saw. Maybe he told her she’d kept everyone waiting long enough.

Run free, Lola Jo. Thank you for loving our family when they needed you most.

You were never forgotten. You were always loved.

Most people evaluate tools by asking what they can do.

The better question is what they stop you from having to do again.

There's a difference between a capable tool and a useful one. A capable tool can impress you in a demo. A useful tool quietly removes a piece of friction from your actual week - and never puts it back.

Daylight hours are longer. Mowers are in full swing, and Mama’s iced coffee is all the rage. Adjustments are in order.
