Paul Krugman tells why he left The New York Times in December, after 25 years as an op-ed columnist.

In his Substack column today, the Nobel-winning economist writes that his situation at The Times "had become intolerable" in 2024.
(Krugman has been a client of Monteiro & Company for 26 years.)

Over his first 24 years at The Times, Krugman writes that he faced "very few editorial constraints." That changed abruptly in 2024 when his once lightly edited columns faced exhausting rounds of editing, efforts to water down his arguments. Furthermore, he faced attempts to dictate what he could and could not write about.

Check out more details about Krugman's departure from the newspaper, including how he remains grateful to The Times for hiring him and providing him that platform. Also, please subscribe to his Substack column which began in December.

IN THE NEWS:

We're getting the word out on Rivertowns Books' "Why Books Still Matter."
The book honors the legacy of free-speech advocate and Denver indie bookstore owner Joyce Meskis. For 41 years she ran the Tattered Cover, which became a model for indie bookstores across the nation.
The Denver Gazette reported on the book's launch party and panel discussion, which covered the issues of book banning, indie bookstores and the publishing industry.

OUR LATEST PROJECT

With book banning in the news on a near-daily basis, “Why Books Still Matter” is a timely collection of essays by 16 luminaries from book-related fields and the U.S. Senate.

The book honors the legacy of free-speech advocate and Denver indie bookstore owner Joyce Meskis and launches on May 18, at the Tattered Cover, which she ran for 41 years. The event will feature panelist and speaker Sen. John Hickenlooper, a long-time Meskis friend who contributed an essay.

We've been working on a marketing plan and will be doing publicity for this book.

We'll be telling you more about this exciting book soon.

The Affordable Care Act, a.k.a. Obamacare, has been a huge success (see below for details) so it's no surprise that this program could face elimination if Republicans take over the U.S. government in 2025, according to our client Paul Krugman.

How successful?
"The percentage of Americans without health insurance has fallen by almost half since 2010. Federal spending on health programs, far from exploding, has grown much more slowly than forecast," Krugman writes.

Republicans seem determined to destroy the Affordable Care Act.
