I’ve been disappointed in myself lately.

Not in my team. In my own leadership.

I kept hiring freelancers hoping for partners people who’d think alongside me, challenge my ideas, catch what I missed.

Instead, I got task-executors.

People who did exactly what I said. Not one inch more. Some leaned on AI without checking a single output.

Here’s the hard truth I had to sit with:

That’s not on them. That’s on me.

Not every freelancer is a leader and that’s not a flaw, it’s a fact you have to design around. Most people will match the altitude of your brief. Ask for a task, get a task. Ask for a thinking partner, you have to say so.

So here’s what I’m changing:

→ Say “partner,” not “task.” If you want someone who pushes back, put it in the job post. Don’t assume it’s implied.

→ Interview for judgment, not just skill. Ask how they’d handle an ambiguous brief. The answer tells you if they’ll think or just execute.

→ Consider going local. Someone who understands your market and context without translation loss is worth the premium.

→ Vet white-label partners on process, not price. The right team can be exceptional but only with airtight instructions and real QA on their end.

Clarity isn’t a soft skill in leadership.

It’s the line between hiring hands and hiring minds.

What’s the biggest gap you’ve found between what you asked for and what you got? Drop it below I’d love to compare notes.

You don’t need a bigger budget. You need to know your person.

Why do we say "trust the process" like it's a speed setting?

Here's the thing nobody tells you: nobody said the process has to be fast, and nobody said it has to be slow. It's a process. It's whatever you make it.

I used to think faster automatically meant better. It doesn't. And I used to think slower automatically meant ineffective. It doesn't either. What actually matters is what you do in the in-between time.

Example: I need help from professionals who are skilled at things I'm not. I get quotes. Say someone quotes me $1,000. I look at what's already in place, what's actually urgent, and whether that $1,000 needs to leave my account today or next month. If I spend it, great — that moves me ahead. But while that project is in motion, I'm not sitting around refreshing my email like it's a pizza tracker. I'm still doing my part: outreach, landing pages, building relationships. The in-between time is not a waiting room. It's still the process.

Trusting the process doesn't mean staying still. It also doesn't mean sprinting to the next shiny thing every time it looks quicker. Your process will look different from mine, and mine will look different from yours and that's fine. We don't get to see the whole outcome yet. We just get to trust that it's better than what we planned in a rush.

Here's the part that matters most to me, the part I actually want you to sit with:

Last year, the Holy Spirit told me: "Everything that you do, do it with purpose."

That hit me because I have a habit of saying yes to everything I like people, I like to help, so "sure, let's do it" comes easy. But saying yes to something before I'm ready to actually use it isn't purpose. It's just motion. Now, before I move, I ask myself: Is this the right time? Am I prepared to actually walk this out, or am I just chasing "fast"?

So trust the process. Not because it's quick. Not because it's slow. Because it's yours, and it's building toward something you can't fully see yet.

A coach gives you tools. A mentor gives you perspective. But neither one can give you what only you can create: your transformation.

I’ve sat across from both paid for programs, taken notes until my hand cramped, applied frameworks I was promised would change everything.

And here’s what 25 years in home care and over a decade in marketing have taught me: the title on the person helping you matters far less than what you do after the session ends.

For healthcare professionals stepping into entrepreneurship and especially for women building agencies from the ground up I see this constantly. We chase the “right” coach, the “right” mentor, the right certification… and quietly hope it’ll do the heavy lifting for us.

It won’t.

Your transformation isn’t handed to you. It’s built application by application, decision by decision, day by day.

So before you invest in the next program, ask yourself: am I looking for guidance, or am I looking for permission to delay the work?

What’s actually moved the needle for you the coach, the mentor, or the moment you decided to act?

💡 Wisdom Wednesday

Someone slid into my DMs and asked

“If you already have a team, why are you still looking to fill positions?”

Great question. Here’s the answer:

When your team is already locked in on high-level, high-impact work, outsourcing the smaller tasks isn’t a gap in leadership. It’s a sign of it.

Protecting your team’s bandwidth is the strategy.

The strongest leaders know the difference between what needs their team’s expertise and what simply needs to get done. They don’t let small tasks slow down big momentum.

A team at full capacity isn’t a problem to solve it’s a result to protect.

Two decades in healthcare taught me one thing about hiring marketing help cheap isn’t the answer, but neither is the highest price tag.

Whether you’re on Upwork, getting LinkedIn DMs, or vetting agencies what you’re really looking for is a partner, not just a vendor.

Know the difference before you sign anything.

It's Friday and I want to talk about why I started this journey.
Not the business plan. Not the revenue goals.
The real reason.
Freedom.
Freedom to work on my own terms.
Freedom to build something that outlasts me.
Freedom to show my daughters that a Black woman can own her time, her income, and her future.
Nobody tells you that the road to freedom is one of the hardest things you'll ever choose.
The late nights. The self doubt. The moments where you wonder if you made the right decision leaving the comfort of a steady paycheck.
But then you have a week like this one.
And you remember exactly why you started.
Freedom isn't given. It's built one decision, one client, one boundary at a time.
To every woman in my network who is building their freedom
Keep going. It's worth it.
Happy Freedom Friday. 🖤
