Yesterday was a great day surrounded by farm families, political leaders, industry professionals, warehousemen, university leadership, extension agents and beyond celebrating America's 250th Birthday, the 137th Opening of the Wilson To***co Market, and the history of to***co in the local community.
In 1777, Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane negotiated 5 million pounds of to***co to secure 2 million livres from France to finance our early nation's fight for independence.
In that moment, to***co was more than a crop. It was an instrument of commerce and diplomacy. The work done in early America's fields helped generate the resources for the cause of liberty. That connection between agriculture and the strength of our nation continues today.
We still continue to recognize and appreciate the role to***co brings to the Southeast farming community. To***co secures a farm's ability to diversify. The average farm grows 3-4 other crops often including sweetpotatoes, fresh produce, grains, cattle, hogs, chickens, you name it.
Thank you to Rep. David Rouzer, Congressman Don Davis, Lt. Governor Rachel Hunt, Steve Troxler - NC Commissioner of Agriculture among many others for your presence yesterday. We are grateful for your commitment to NC and American Agriculture.
