Years ago, Taco Bell said it was buying the Liberty Bell. Guess what? Media thought, “well, it IS April 1.”

And they called to VERIFY the information.

The fact that media ran with “Voltswagen” before doing that astounds me. Would not, oh, maybe the automotive beat reporters who have covered VW for eons have been given the heads up on a name change?!?!?

Our global news media system shoots itself on the foot so often I don’t blink at the low credibility the vertical gets from the public. There are always exceptions but incidents like this do not help.

Scott Keogh, the head of Volkswagen Group of America, said the early April Fools’ Day joke wasn’t meant to deceive.
