Friends -- my dear friends and artist colleagues Treehouse Shakers are celebrating 20 years this season and once again fundraising for their company and the opportunity to serve underserved youth in NYC. Won't you support them? I have a bid on some things and I encourage you to take a look at the diverse goods and services for auction. Great art, experiences, dining options...something for everyone. I loved managing and repping this company for 5 years, seeing their work with my little guy, and being part of their mission.

"Treehouse Shakers are raising funds for our 2016-2017 20th Anniversary New York City season. For these performances, Treehouse Shakers will subsidize tickets to bring hundreds of low-income families and school audiences, as well as provide arts residencies to schools across the five boroughs. We are dedicated in fostering imagination and providing underserved youth access to the arts, where normally they may not have a point of entry."

I have doing more research on place making lately. It's not entirely new to me and yet I never fully realized how all encompassing it is and how it involves so many sectors from urban planning, architecture, funding, and the arts.

A true original who inspired a generation with her writings and activism in support of community-based planning.

He confused me as a child (like so many 80s musicians). I grew up with parents who loved 60s classics, classic rock and 80s pop. And yet busting through all that were punk, new age, funk, and more - and in quintessential 80s style: experimental, mysterious, gender and genre bending. Prince was that. And likely one of the reasons my parents didn't let me watch MTV until I was about 13 (that's why we have friends' houses)!

I enjoyed it all. And like Bowie, reminding us there are no simple categories. To me, Prince's legacy is to spend more time experimenting and taking risks and living this life, to just do it and not worry about perceptions.

These types of projects take a ton of thought and planning, yet are incredible when they happen. I see funders backing this sort of work more and more and I'm seeing it unfold before my eyes in Philadelphia.

The winners of the Knight Cities Challenge should be an inspiration for creative urban planners everywhere.
