You don't need to understand Google Ads, Facebook Ads, bidding strategies, targeting, or marketing acronyms before talking to a digital marketer.

What you do need is an understanding of your business, your goals, and what you're trying to accomplish.

That's an important part of my philosophy at A.D.S. Digital Marketing: you bring the business expertise. I'll bring the digital marketing expertise. Together, we can figure out the best way to connect the two.

Why A.D.S.?

I built A.D.S. Digital Marketing around four things I believe matter to small and mid-sized businesses: transparent communication, personalized service, goal-oriented strategies, and affordable management.

They're more than selling points. They shape how I work with clients and why I chose to build A.D.S. differently.

Digital marketing built around your business.

Why did I build A.D.S. Digital Marketing differently?

I wanted to create an agency specifically around the needs of small and mid-sized businesses, with a more direct client relationship, personalized strategies, and a leaner structure that helps keep management costs reasonable.

This week's A.D.S. Blog explains the thinking behind that model and what it means for the businesses I work with.

A.D.S. Insights In Action: Automation can do a lot, but it still needs the right direction.

Goals, business context, and real-world results help give automated systems the signals they need to make better decisions.

That's where human understanding remains critical. Automation can help execute the strategy, but people still need to give that strategy its direction.

A.D.S. Recommended Reading #010: Google Ads automation makes governance a competitive advantage

This week's Recommended Reading from Search Engine Land explores an increasingly important topic related to Google Ads: increasing automation. The article discusses how better business signals, guardrails, and feedback can help keep automation focused on the outcomes a business actually values.

One of my biggest takeaways:

Automation can help execute the strategy. It shouldn't replace the human understanding that gives the strategy its direction.

Is Google Ads Becoming Too Automated?

Google Ads continues to automate more of the decisions advertisers traditionally made themselves, from bidding and targeting to search matching, creative, and even landing-page selection.

Is that necessarily a bad thing?

I don't think so.

I'm excited about what automation can accomplish. These systems can analyze information, identify patterns, and make decisions at a scale and speed that humans simply can't replicate.

But there's an important piece automation still needs:

Direction.

Google can optimize a campaign toward the objective we give it. But it can't guarantee that we gave it the right objective in the first place.

That's where understanding the business still matters.

What are we actually trying to accomplish?
Why does that goal matter?
What does a valuable customer look like?
Are the conversions we're seeing actually good leads?
Are the results on the screen producing meaningful results for the business?

In this week's A.D.S. Blog, I share my perspective on Google's increasing automation, and why I believe automation should help execute the strategy, not replace the understanding required to create it.

A.D.S. Insights In Action: Don't guess. Diagnose.

When an advertising campaign isn't producing the results you expected, it's tempting to start making changes.

Change the audience.
Change the creative.
Change the landing page.
Increase the budget.

But what if you're changing something that isn't actually causing the problem?

Different metrics can help us understand where performance may be breaking down.

Is the ad being seen but not clicked? Look at what the click-through rate is telling you.

Are people clicking but not converting? The conversion rate can help shift the investigation toward what happens after the click.

Are conversions happening, but at a cost that doesn't make sense? Now we're looking at a different part of the problem.

Different problems. Different signals. Different solutions.

The goal isn't to change everything. It's to use the data to make more informed decisions about what needs attention and why.

A.D.S. Recommended Reading #009: Why Is My Ad Not Converting? The Funnel vs the Ad

When an advertising campaign isn't producing the results you expected, how do you know what needs to change?

This week's Recommended Reading from Asset Academy uses an analogy I really like: think of an underperforming campaign like finding a leak.

If there's a leak somewhere in a system, fixing an area that isn't causing the problem won't solve it. Advertising can work the same way.

The article takes this week's A.D.S. Blog topic a step further by showing how metrics can help identify where that “leak” may be.

For example:

➡️ Are people seeing the ad but not clicking?
➡️ Are they clicking but not converting?
➡️ Are they converting, but at too high a cost?

Each situation tells us something different, and may require a different solution.

One of my biggest takeaways: metrics aren't just numbers to report. They can be diagnostic tools that help us understand what is happening and what to investigate next.

"Why aren't my ads working?”

When an advertising campaign isn't producing the results you expected, it's easy to assume the ads themselves are the problem.

But advertising involves much more than the ad.

Your goal, budget, platform, audience, creative, website or landing page, and measurement can all affect the final outcome.

That's why the first response to an underperforming campaign shouldn't necessarily be to change everything.

Instead, ask:

🎯 Was the original goal clear and realistic?
💰 Does the budget support that goal?
📱 Are we using the right platform?
👥 Are we reaching the right audience?
📣 Is the ad giving people a reason to act?
🖱️ What happens after they click?
⏱️ Has the campaign had enough time and data?
📊 Are we measuring the right things?

In this week's A.D.S. Blog, I walk through the advertising journey and explain how identifying where performance is breaking down can help determine what actually needs to change.

Understand the problem before recommending the solution.
