For a long time, there seemed to be only two categories.

Good girl or worldly girl.
Faithful or fallen.
Inside or outside.

But my life never fit that neatly.

Growing up did not erase my faith. Questioning things did not erase it either.

I was not leaving the faith. I was just refusing the category.

Some of the worst things that happened to me changed me. That does not mean they get to define me.

Healing, for me, has included learning that I can tell the story without giving it all the power. I get to decide how much weight it carries now.

I do not believe everything happens for a reason.

I do believe God can still meet us in the aftermath.

That is the heart of this essay.

It is about the difference between God causing pain and God being present in what comes after. It is about grief, free will, suffering, and restoration.

If that idea has ever mattered to you, this one is for you.

We brought Uncle Colin lunch, balloons, and some art I made for his birthday today. The sugar cane was supposed to weigh the balloons down.

Naturally, Royce and Uncle Colin decided it would work much better for fighting each other while also attacking the balloons. 😂

A very normal family birthday visit.

I am not five years old.

I have had decades to learn what overwhelms me, what helps me regulate, when I need silence, when I need to walk away, and how to keep myself from reaching the breaking point.

That can make autism look different from the outside.

But learning how to accommodate yourself is not the same thing as becoming less autistic.

That does not make me less autistic. It means I have more practice.

We all want room to grow.

Room to become wiser. More healed. More honest. More ourselves.

But sometimes we forget that the person we love needs that same freedom.

You cannot ask someone to remain familiar and convenient forever while giving yourself permission to evolve.

Lasting love has to make room for both people to change.

His siblings were at the shop cleaning, but Royce had more important business to handle. Naturally, that meant bringing the entire staff along for the meeting. 😂

Gir, Fox, and the rest of the babies take their office responsibilities very seriously.

People can look at a body for a few seconds and decide they know its story.

Lazy.
Undisciplined.
Unhealthy.
Someone who stopped trying.

But bodies carry things strangers cannot see.

Illness. Medication. Pain. Survival. Years of pushing through.

My body tells a story. Just not the one strangers think they are reading.

I spent a long time thinking closure required participation from the person who hurt me.

An explanation. An apology. A conversation where everything finally made sense.

Sometimes that conversation never comes.

And sometimes healing begins when we stop waiting for someone else to finish the story for us. 🤍

From my newest essay, Closure Is Not Always a Conversation.
