Shouldn't we focus on features instead of feelings?

Features are important, but they don't tell the whole story.

I mean, pockets are features, and who doesn't love a good pocket?

But it's not just the pocket you love. It's what it represents and what it allows you to do.

A great pocket gives you more freedom by allowing you to do things like...

๐ŸŒธ keep your hands warm and cozy
๐ŸŒธ carry around your favorite gems
๐ŸŒธ pick up interesting shells
๐ŸŒธ hoard restaurant mints for later

Hey, you might not do all those things, but it's really nice to know that you can.

The right pocket feels great. And your copy should feel great, too!

So go ahead and talk about the features a bit. You can mention how many pockets you have or how they're reinforced if you must.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Just don't forget to tell your audience the freedom those pockets will bring and how they'll make them feel.

How cute is my sleepy pup??

This is after I read to him from a long, boring website.

When people look at your website and other marketing materials, they don't want to read a novel.

Stop lulling them to sleep with long, rambling sentences and huge paragraphs of text.

Short, snappy copy is loads more engaging.

Why? Because it's easier to read and it mimics natural speech.

So, forget what your teachers told you. Write like you talk!
..Okay, that picture isn't really from reading to my pup from a boring website. I would never!

Today's bit of wisdom comes from the unparalleled brilliance of Octavia E. Butler:

โ€œYou don't start out writing good stuff. You start out writing crap and thinking it's good stuff, and then gradually you get better at it.

That's why I say one of the most valuable traits is persistence."

Writing is a skill that takes practice, patience, and the ability to pick yourself up and start all over again.

Over time, you'll become a better writer.

In a similar vein, each draft you revisit will become stronger and more poignant.

There are some exceptions to the rule (ideas can hit quicklyโ€“especially under pressure), but overall, writing is a process that should be honored.

The first step is vital. Get your ideas on paper (or down in a word processor), whether you think they're genius or garbage.

When you return the next day with fresh eyes, you may have a different opinion of your work. You'll find angles that can begin to tell an idea you want to explore, or you might realize that what you wrote is cliche or lacking in substance.

Whether your first draft is brilliant or underwhelming, you'll have a starting place and a better idea of which direction to head in.

For the strongest and most persuasive copy, be sure to work the drafting process into your schedule as much as possible!

As a copywriter, I often put my writing energy into work, but taking a moment to write for myself always gets me into a solid headspace.

Whether you reflect on work or personal life, journaling can help you start the new year on the right foot. What were some of your successes? Failures? What are some of your goals for the new year? What have you learned?

Let the words flow, and just get it out. This writing is for you โ€“ not your editor!

Wishing you all a wonderful year filled with joy, strength, and rest!

It's surprisingly easy to end up in someone's spam folder. There are hundreds of words and phrases that can send you there if you're not careful with your emails.

You might not have a way around using some of these words, like "free" or "warranty." That's okay---using these words infrequently and in the context of your message shouldn't be a problem.

But if you're using these words over and over, or you're using more than one of these words in an email at any given time... you might end up in Spamlandia. And trust me, it's not as fun as it sounds.

So how can you avoid this dreaded fate?

The main way to stay out of spam folders is to not sound "spammy." Don't rely on gimmicks, tricks, or buzzwords to try to get people to open your emails or to purchase your service. Don't get crazy with exclamation marks, and avoid them in your subject lines. Keep the above words out of your messages or to the minimum.

Your emails need to sound natural, friendly, and reasonable. Don't oversensationalize your offers. (And the word offer is another one to be careful with!)

Oh, and never buy your email list. That'll get you a first-class ticket to the spam folder. ๐Ÿ–

Did any of these words surprise you? Tell me the toughest spam word to avoid when you're writing emails!

The holidays can leave you feeling straight up drained. Even though you might be busier than ever, take some time to recognize the little things you do to make the season special. That counts for both your business and your downtime. Give yourself some love. You deserve it! โ˜ƒ๏ธ
