I used to live listening to Dr. Joy Browne on AM 800 CKLW. She was an amazing psychologist who would talk with her listeners about their challenges in life. I have also wanted to do a mental health podcast since becoming a therapist, but figured I might have to wait a bit for that opportunity. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Taylor Swift always has perfect timing. Her new song/video captures what it is like to be in a relationship with someone who is narcissistic.

Domestic violence is often understood as physical abuse, but it extends far beyond that. One of the most insidious forms of abuse is narcissistic abuse, which often manifests as coercive control.

Core Narcissistic Traits

*Grandiose Self-Importance: An inflated sense of self-worth, exaggerating achievements, and expecting recognition as superior without matching effort.
*Lack of Empathy: An inability or unwillingness to recognize, validate, or care about others' feelings, needs, and boundaries.
*Excessive Need for Admiration: A constant demand for praise, attention, and validation from those around them.
*Sense of Entitlement: Expecting special, preferential treatment and automatic compliance with their unreasonable demands.
*Exploitative Behavior: Using people for personal, professional, or social gain without remorse or regard for the impact on others.
*Arrogance and Contempt: Acting haughty, looking down on others, or belittling people to protect a fragile internal self-esteem.

For my birthday this year, I'm asking for donations to Affirmations Community Center. I've chosen this nonprofit because they are a wonderful org! I interned at Affirmations and now I am a therapist there. They need financial support now more than ever. Federal government cuts have really affected the community we serve. I see it every day. People living in their cars, people denied disability, people whose food stamps were decreased or removed altogether. It is quite scary.

I hope you'll consider dobating 5 or 10 bucks as a way to celebrate with me.

Tonight, I’m holding space for Hayden Panettiere and everyone who is grieving her loss.

Let this be a gentle reminder: you do not have to carry everything alone. Needing support does not make you “too much.” Reaching out does not make you a burden. Asking someone to sit with you, listen to you, help you find resources, or simply remind you that you matter is an act of courage.

You deserve care, not only when things become unbearable, but in the ordinary hard moments, too.

If you are struggling today, consider sending one text:
“Hey, I’m having a hard time. Do you have a few minutes?”

And if someone reaches out to you, let them know:
“You are not a burden. I’m glad you told me.”
