🗽 Okay, I I love this poster cause it feels so formal and the empty space really draws me in in-person. This was the last of the poster collection! If you look back which one was your favorite? Go back and let me know: I’m biased!

🎵 I am going to be super honest, I don’t feel like writing much about this poster because it was made in 2019. I do want to add it to the feed but there are far more important things I am excited to announce. Please stay tuned for a very exciting and PURCHASABLE announcement! See you later jokers!

🎄 This Caroling concert was a very rushed poster but that meant much of how it turned out was in my control! I didn't want to do a typical festive feeling since, I was informed that the event was very formal. I simplified the most iconic symbol of the winter holidays into a foreground and background.
If I were to do this project again today, I think that the addition of star atop the tree could have been quite nice and I think the type could be improved and/or changed!
I learned after working there, that this is why the Art Director role is so coveted. An Art Director essentially serves as someone who translates what clients want/need into the visual language that an Graphic Designer can understand and experiment from.
I'm trying to learn more about what it means to have this skill to stand out. I truly think it just comes over time.

♒ It's funny how some people refuse to think they are creative. Even creative people refuse to think that they could be successful in more than one medium. The world can be too critical but there is an elasticity in everyone that means anyone can do what they love.
Sometimes clients will just approach you with the instructions of "make anything you want." It is a very difficult position to be put in because it is very rare that someone says I love your style completely and anything you make will be great! It's more likely that they say "do whatever you want" and then say after you make something you're really passionate about: "it's great but could you make it more like this?"
People only know what they don't want.
This is a rather expensive method. The only barrier i've found from this pitfall is doing extensive research before the project begins (which makes the process take longer), charing more (which can affect the clients budget), or avoiding those types of clients when those redflags present themselves.
In other words, in most cases, "do whatever you want" is a red flag, not a green one.

🎸 Put yourself in a vacuum if you're trying to figure out how you think.
I liked having the freedom to try new things on my own in this Student Assistant position. Unfortunately, on many, many, occasions I felt like I was set upt to fail, when they told me that I had taken work in the wrong directions.
I asked many questions and aimed highly to please but at every turn, there was someone who treated me as though I was insubordinate. The world would be such a better place (especially between clients and designers) if people trusted their coworkers intentions and made efforts to ask questions and give honest answers.
My one of my favorite memories from this period was, my superior telling me that saying "mhmm" while listening was disrespectful. I was so shocked. I had no idea how to please someone who was creating every conflict. I am so grateful to be where I am. Choose healthy people to work with you.
Having such an awful experience with employers and employees has instilled a dream in me of having my own employees and clients in the future so I can be proud of our great work and relationship with one another!

🎻 Working for the CSUS Music Department was very strange. On one hand I had just about total freedom to make what I was told to make in whatever way I deemed fit. On the otherhand, it was only after I would make it the way I envisioned, that they would told me I did it wrong.
I believe most people underestimate how hard it is to work as a Graphic Designer. Designing requires such great communication and insight. Everyday people lack the skills to speak the language you spend all your life learning.
I learned after working there, that this is why the Art Director role is so coveted. An Art Director essentially serves as someone who translates what clients want/need into the visual language that an Graphic Designer can understand and experiment from.
I'm trying to learn more about what it means to have direct Graphic Designers because it's a skill that's so greatly neglected. If anyone has anygood books/articles/videos they reccomend on the subject matter please let me know!

🚲 100% in your best interest: Do not design for the csus music department.
While I know it's in my best interest to not say anything if I don't have something nice to say, I feel I need to be honest and speak my truth when we talk about our history.
It is in every designer's best interest to have some self respect and not to tolerate employer abuse. I worked for the CSUS Music Department as a Graphic Designer Student Assistant. It was traumatic.
I don't want to bad talk anyone and I will do the base curtousey of keeping names out of it but if I am posting my old work and trying to make an authentic connection with other designers, then I will be honest and stand proud.
My superiors quite literally told me "You will never have what it takes to be a graphic designer." Funnily enough, it was quite cinematic. I was by no means lazy before that point but the zeal for this occupation has only grown everyday for the last eight years I've worn the designer badge.
Thankfully, I later worked for the ECS Department and it was fantastic!
