We usually spend a whole lot of time practicing variables; one of the things I noticed 9th graders struggle to remember or differentiate. In this interactive gallery walk, students move from station to station to observe colorful, engaging experiment scenarios, discuss their thinking with classmates, and identify the independent variable, dependent variable, control group, or constants.
This activity is especially beneficial for diverse learners because it combines movement, collaboration, discussion, and visual supports with scientific thinking. Students have multiple opportunities to process information through images, conversation, and written responses, allowing them to build confidence while strengthening their understanding of experimental design. By examining a variety of real-world scenarios, students develop critical thinking skills and gain a deeper understanding of variables before designing and conducting their own investigations.
I personally like to have my students work in pairs to complete these collaboratively.
