I became a Realtor in 1980. Fresh out of Real Estate School, passed the Exam, got sponsored by a Broker and was Ready For Action! The Roller Coaster Ride began when the interest rates hit 16%, in the early 80's! The average 3 Bedroom Cape or Ranch with a Garage was $35,000.00! The Highs & Lows, and Ups and Downs, went from an Abundance of Listings, to not enough saleable inventory for our Buyers. Many of the office Deals Fell Apart. Lack of Consumer Confidence in the market, along with the constant Rate Fluctuations quickly took it's Toll! After approximately 3 months of being a New Agent and with 3 of my personal deals falling apart, my Brokers office Closed For Good!
Technology like Smart Phones weren't even close to being invented, and Fax Machines were few, and very Primitive. Scanning didn't exist, and Scanning Docs wasn't available till years later. We burned lots of gasoline because all transactions were done, in person, whether two visits or Ten Visits! Some Realtors were survivors, but there were many causalities and most Realtors and Brokers, had some Level Of Hurt!
The folks that survived had One thing in common, and it still stands true today. Consistency! Weekly and monthly consistent closings! Unfortunately back then, only companies and individuals with deep pockets had a higher survival rate because of Lead Generation. Most Solo Agents couldn't afford this Luxury.
