When I started Mariah Creative Company, I expected my friends and family to be my biggest cheerleaders.
What I didn’t expect was how loud I’d cheer for them.
Building something of my own has changed how I see the people around me. Now I notice it everywhere — friends quietly pursuing their own version of “this is mine.”
→ My friend, a software developer and single dad, who landed a corporate role right out of university and is already thriving — he just earned a raise — all while pursuing his passion for DJing.
→ My friend who hit a ceiling in corporate after years of climbing. She’s now apprenticing at a tattoo shop, with her sights set on owning her own one day.
→ My friend building websites, brand strategy, and social content for local businesses. A mom whose goal is to leave the restaurant industry and build something for herself and her family. Everything she touches turns to gold — and watching her do it has been incredible.
→ My friend who lost her restaurant job to hurricane flooding. She bridged the gap at Starbucks knowing it wasn’t her path, and I was so happy to hear she’s now a realtor — joining her father’s family business.
→ My friend, a health technician of over a decade, who’s now studying for his mortgage loan officer license. A path that promises more financial freedom, more time back, and the chance to help people land their dream homes.
Here’s what I’ve been thinking about: “building something of your own” looks different for everyone. Sometimes it’s a business. Sometimes it’s a license, an apprenticeship, a passion project, or a degree on a different path than the one you started on.
The topic is ownership — over your direction, your time, your future.
And the more I bet on myself, the more I notice the people around me doing the same. That’s not a coincidence. Ambition is contagious. So is support.
Grateful for the people in my corner. Even more grateful to be in theirs.
