Did you know Nantucket was once the whaling capital of the world?

Before petroleum changed everything, whale oil literally kept the lights on... powering lamps, lubricating machinery, and making candles. It was one of the most economically powerful industries in early America, and Nantucket was at the center of all of it.

The Nantucket Whaling Museum is actually housed in a restored 1847 oil and candle factory (Nantucket Historical Association) where all that whale oil was refined and processed. Walking through it is genuinely wild... there's a 46-foot s***m whale skeleton, an 1849 Fresnel lighthouse lens, and an incredible collection of scrimshaw art that sailors carved from whale bones to pass the time at sea.

The story of the whaleship Essex, stove by a whale in the Pacific in 1820, is also told here, which is the real-life event that inspired Moby-Dick.

It's a fascinating and honestly complicated piece of history. The industry drove incredible economic growth and innovation... and also decimated whale populations on a massive scale. Really grateful we found other ways to power the world. If you're ever on Nantucket, it's worth a visit.

I took this old wood tray we had lying around and gave it new life. Three layers of resin later, the tray has swirls of mica powder and dried New England leaves at the peak of their colors embedded into the resin. I'll title this one "Foliage".
