99% of all marketing is done wrong! This started with the introduction of television in the 1950's and has negatively influenced all mediums of marketing ever since. If you're a business owner who's spending money on marketing, there's a 99% chance yours is wrong also. I went through 200 local ads trying to find one example of a business doing it right. I didn't find even one.
Marketing used to inform and educate the target audience as to why they are the best choice to do business with. That was no longer possible with a 30 second television commercial. Enter the age of the Brand Builder's.
Creativity & Repetition (the C & R approach) became the preferred marketing method. Slogans and catch phrases dominated marketing; ie. "Don't Squeeze The Charmin", "Maxwell House, Good To The Last Drop." You can still recognize them. (For millennials, "I'm Lovin' It" or "Can You Hear Me Now").
Does it work? Yes, if you have a billion dollar marketing budget. Since the 1950's, all businesses started copying the methods "the big boys" in business were using. Your local dentist will spend $20,000 for a creative ad agency to come up with the perfect radio jingle to promote his business...and it's usually awful and communicates nothing of value.
Now ALL MARKETING is littered with platitudes and cliches that do nothing to help the consumer make a buying decision. Do you really need to say in your marketing things like "Trusted & Reliable", "Friendly Service With a Smile", "We Get The Job Right The First Time." WELL I WOULD HOPE SO! How about "We Accept Visa & Mastercard!"... Really? You Do? You're the ones! I've been searching forever to find a business that accepts both!
What is effective marketing supposed to accomplish? 1. Get the attention of your target audience 2. Facilitate the decision making process 3. Have a low-risk offer to make it easy to take the next step in the buying process. The people selling you your marketing are either Creative Agencies, or Media Sales Reps. Neither of them know how to make marketing work.
Siren Marketing Group provides a 4-step formula that works ALL THE TIME and can double and triple the results of a businesses marketing on the same marketing budget. Interrupt, Engage, Educate, Offer...more on that in my next post. Erik Cloud
