Here's a recreation I did of the bank ad that actually 1. Identifies a Target Audience, 2. Facilitates a decision making process and 3. Provides a low-risk way for them to take an easy step. (Obviously, our graphic designer would make it look cool).

Does anything in this ad give me a reason as to why I shouldbank with them over anyone else? NO! This Ad FAILS!

The Platitude Evaluation Test!

What's a Platitude? Platitudes are words or phrases that are drearily common place and predictable that lack power to evoke interest through overuse or repetition, that are never the less stated AS IF they were original or significant. 3 Ways To Test:
1. Well I would hope so
2. Who else can say that?
3. Cross-out / Write-in test

Here's an example of how marketing is done wrong. The Real Estate Agent flushed money down the toilet on this poor attempt at marketing. You'll see their ad first and then a quick re-write Jim Hary (my business partner) did.

What's your first impression when you see their ad? I guessed flower shop or wedding planner. Did you guess they were a Real Estate Agent talking about the benefits of professional "Home Staging"? That's how they are trying to get you to list your home with them.

99% of all marketing is done wrong! This started with the introduction of television in the 1950's and has negatively influenced all mediums of marketing ever since. If you're a business owner who's spending money on marketing, there's a 99% chance yours is wrong also. I went through 200 local ads trying to find one example of a business doing it right. I didn't find even one.

Marketing used to inform and educate the target audience as to why they are the best choice to do business with. That was no longer possible with a 30 second television commercial. Enter the age of the Brand Builder's.

Creativity & Repetition (the C & R approach) became the preferred marketing method. Slogans and catch phrases dominated marketing; ie. "Don't Squeeze The Charmin", "Maxwell House, Good To The Last Drop." You can still recognize them. (For millennials, "I'm Lovin' It" or "Can You Hear Me Now").

Does it work? Yes, if you have a billion dollar marketing budget. Since the 1950's, all businesses started copying the methods "the big boys" in business were using. Your local dentist will spend $20,000 for a creative ad agency to come up with the perfect radio jingle to promote his business...and it's usually awful and communicates nothing of value.

Now ALL MARKETING is littered with platitudes and cliches that do nothing to help the consumer make a buying decision. Do you really need to say in your marketing things like "Trusted & Reliable", "Friendly Service With a Smile", "We Get The Job Right The First Time." WELL I WOULD HOPE SO! How about "We Accept Visa & Mastercard!"... Really? You Do? You're the ones! I've been searching forever to find a business that accepts both!

What is effective marketing supposed to accomplish? 1. Get the attention of your target audience 2. Facilitate the decision making process 3. Have a low-risk offer to make it easy to take the next step in the buying process. The people selling you your marketing are either Creative Agencies, or Media Sales Reps. Neither of them know how to make marketing work.

Siren Marketing Group provides a 4-step formula that works ALL THE TIME and can double and triple the results of a businesses marketing on the same marketing budget. Interrupt, Engage, Educate, Offer...more on that in my next post. Erik Cloud
