Join us in celebrating Kelly McLaughlin, our remarkable Rising Star for November! 🌟

Kelly’s story begins in the heart of Leucadia, where she was born, raised, and still proudly calls home. Her lifelong roots give her clients a true advantage — local knowledge, community connection, and a deep love for the place she’s always belonged. “I love this town,” Kelly shares. “That’s why I live in the same neighborhood I grew up in.”

Before real estate, Kelly’s path took her to law school, where she excelled on the mock trial team and even interned under then–District Attorney Kamala Harris. That experience shaped her confidence, poise, and ability to command a room. She later practiced criminal defense in San Diego, gaining perspective and skill in high-pressure environments.

After starting a family, Kelly stepped back from law — a “one-year break” that became ten — before rediscovering her passion for real estate. She studied the market, trained under respected brokers, and quickly built a strong foundation of loyal clients. Today, she’s thriving at Compass | Canter Real Estate Group | The Whitney Peyser Team, backed by a close-knit trio of women who support one another in business and life.

With over $20M in 2024 sales and another standout year underway, Kelly attributes her success to connection, trust, and guiding clients through one of life’s most meaningful decisions.

A lifelong local, a dedicated mom, and a driven professional — Kelly McLaughlin is a Rising Star whose journey continues to inspire.

Every year I hit this same moment...

The calm after the gala and right before Thanksgiving. It’s when everything slows down just enough to take stock of what really matters.

The people.
The work.
The relationships that make it all possible.

Having Thanksgiving land right after one of our biggest events is kind of perfect. I walk out of that room surrounded by clients, friends, and partners, and I can’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude.

Not just for the business we do, but for the people who make it worth doing.

Connection takes effort.

It means paying attention. Knowing what people are working toward. Understanding where they want to go. Remembering the details and being willing to show up when it counts. To get in the trenches with them and find proactive solutions to their needs.

And they're all different.

And so is my relationship with each one. And I take a lot of pride in that.

There’s no real separation between business and personal life for me. The people I work with are often the people I care about, and that overlap is something I’ll never take for granted.

To everyone who’s been part of this journey, thank you. You make the work better, the wins mean more, and the community stronger.

There’s an art to remembering names… and if you want to stand out in rooms full of people who all do the same thing, it’s one of the most underrated skills you can master.

Anything you can do to make a stronger first impression and attach a personal story to a new connection essentially fast-forwards multiple stages of relationship building.

Here’s the cheat code & how to actually make it stick:

Step 1️⃣: Anchor the name in context
When someone introduces themselves, immediately connect their name to something distinctive.
Example: “Jessie — like Jessie from Toy Story” or “Dan Beard — that’s easy, the guy with the beard.”
You’ll never forget a name you’ve already turned into a mini story.

Step 2️⃣: Use it three times within 30 seconds
“Nice to meet you, Dan.”
“Dan, how long have you been in real estate?”
“Dan, you’ve got to meet Tania — she works with top producers too.”
It’s repetition without awkwardness. Bonus: people love hearing their own name.

Step 3️⃣: Anchor the name to emotion or setting
Ask one personal, not prying, question that makes the memory stick.

“Was that your first SDRP event?” or “How do you know Kyle?”

When you follow up, reference the moment: ‘Loved meeting you by the bar at the gala, we still need that margarita rematch!’

It tells them they mattered enough for you to remember.

Now… how to use that connection to multiply connections:

Follow-Up Framework:

✅ 1. Intro with a detail: “Hey Kyle, meet Jessie — she’s the one who launched that Solana Beach listing last quarter that broke the record.”
✅ 2. Reinforce their identity: “You two have similar energy, both connectors, both big on community.”
✅ 3. Add value without asking for anything: “I think you two will hit it off, both obsessed with great marketing and tacos.”

When you bridge introductions this way, you don’t just connect people , you preheat the relationship.

You make each person feel seen before the conversation even starts.

That’s the difference between networking and connecting.

One collects contacts. The other builds community.

👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼 Which one are you doing?

That one landed. And might have needed it more than I realized in this current season of life with toddlers.

Hope this helps someone else have a little more patience and gratitude for the hard moments right now.

We've come farther than we give ourselves credit for even if we're still a work in progress.

If you saw me at the Gala, chances are I probably asked you what you thought of the dance floor.

Truthfully, this was the one thing I was most excited about all night and also the one thing I was the most nervous about. I had this wild idea to fill the dance floor with the faces of our sponsors, the people who help make this event possible every single year. It was a big creative risk, but one that I knew, if it worked, would be something unforgettable.

When I finally saw it for the first time, I almost died.
I loved it.

The design, the energy, the meaning behind it, it all came together perfectly. And getting to see the reactions from our sponsors as they walked in and spotted their faces for the first time, that was the moment for me. The pure joy, laughter, and surprise, it was everything I had hoped for and more.

Some of those reactions are in this video. Some weren’t caught on camera. But every single one meant the world to me because each of these sponsors do as well.

➡️➡️➡️ If you had the time of your life on that dance floor, please show some love in the comments to the incredible sponsors who made it possible.

➡️➡️➡️ Share your favorite part of the night, your favorite memory, or your favorite moment that stuck with you.

These businesses didn’t just support an event. They poured into a vision, a community, and a space that exists to bring the very best people in San Diego real estate together. We’re forever grateful for you.

See you on the dance floor again next year. 💙

This needs to be said...

If you're a partner or potential partner, listen up because this is important...

I frequently get texts from people asking for introductions to top agents and partners featured in the magazine.

But here’s the truth:

Most of the answers you’re looking for are already right in front of you.

Their stories, their wins, their values… are literally written on these pages.

When you skip the step of reading their story, you’re skipping the easiest way to make a genuine connection. You’re asking for access without building relatability. And that’s where real relationships are born.

If you want to build deeper, more meaningful connections using this publication, here are 10 ways to start:

1️⃣ Pick 1–3 people whose stories you actually connected with in each issue.
2️⃣ Follow them on social media and engage with their content.
3️⃣ Send them a message referencing something specific from their article. Something that stood out or resonated with you.
4️⃣ Tag them in your stories and show support for what they’re doing when their story drops.
5️⃣ Comment thoughtfully on their posts. No copy-paste compliments.
6️⃣ If you share mutual connections, ask how they know each other.
7️⃣ If you reach out to me for an intro, tell me what connected with you so I can make a warm introduction, not a cold one.
8️⃣ Re-share their article. It’s an easy way to show appreciation and get on their radar.
9️⃣ Bring them up in conversation at events or mixers. People remember who talks about them positively.
🔟 And most importantly, treat this publication like what it truly is. A relationship tool, not just a networking list.

It’s your inside look at the lives, values, and journeys of the people you want to work with.

When you take the time to learn who they are, not just what they do, you’ll find that the warm intro was actually right in front of you the whole time.
