Presidents' Day is a federal holiday celebrated in the United States on the third Monday in February. The holiday was established to honor the birthday of the first President of the United States, George Washington, which falls on February 22.

Initially, the holiday was known as "Washington's Birthday" and was celebrated only in the District of Columbia and other states that recognized the date as a state holiday. In 1968, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act was signed into law, which shifted the date of the celebration of several federal holidays, including Washington's Birthday, to the third Monday in February to create more three-day weekends for the nation's workers.

Over time, the holiday has come to be known as Presidents' Day, which also honors the contributions of all past U.S. presidents, not just George Washington.
