Dear Friends,

Breaking into Product Marketing: A Guide for the Product Marketing Interview is an interview guide for anyone involved in the product marketing world, whether as a hiring manager, a product manager, in product marketing leadership, a marketing lead, or an aspiring product marketer.

"Breaking Into Product Marketing is an amazing guide and resource for aspirational Product Marketers, a great refresher for current PMMs, and solid reference for Product Marketing leaders who are looking to build powerful Product Marketing functions."
—Emad Kazi Head of Product Marketing, Kajabi

"Once again Yasmeen demonstrates why she is the foremost authority in Product Marketing with yet another insightful guide for aspiring product marketers. Breaking into Product Marketing is a must-read primer full of up-to-date information and tips on how to prepare and ace interviews at both tech and non-tech companies. This is the kind of valuable knowledge I wish I had early in my career, that will give the reader an “unfair” advantage in the highly competitive job market."
—Francisco T. Bram, former Head of Product Marketing Uber Eats, VP of Marketing, Albertsons Companies

Knowing which questions might come up in the product marketing interview will set candidates up for success. In this book, I share 40 of the most popular product marketing questions that often come up in the product marketing interview. I also include 10 questions for mid-level and more senior and experienced product marketers. My hope is that Breaking into Product Marketing will become a guidebook for anyone who truly wants to understand this role, how to interview for it, and how it best fits into their own company or organization.

Writing a book takes an army of supporters, and I have so many people to thank for their support on this journey. Thank you to Evelyn Watts, SwingSearch, Emad Kazi, Francisco T. Bram, Vanessa Thompson, Mary Shirley and so many more PMM's for their support on this journey.

If you are interested in some of my earlier books on product marketing, you can find them on Amazon.

I would greatly appreciate a review on Amazon if you find the book useful.

After talking to many hiring managers, I have observed that a majority of them want to understand a candidate’s interests, unique competitive advantage, and which part of the product marketing experience moves them in order to place them on the right teams and in the right role.

Breaking into Product Marketing: a guide for the product marketing interview is an interview guide for anyone involved in the product marketing world, whether as a hiring manager, a product manager, someone in product marketing leadership, a marketing lead, or an aspiring product marketer.

Knowing which questions might come up in the product marketing interview will set candidates up for success. In this book, I share 40 of the most popular product marketing questions that often come up in the product marketing interview. I also include 10 questions for mid-level and more senior and experienced product marketers.

In many cases, there is not one definitive answer to a question, so it’s important to use these answers as a guide. The answers often depend on your experience, your curiosity, and your exposure to and interest in a business and a product. While I can share “how” to answer each question, I think it is far more important that you have the right mindset when answering them, and that is what I emphasize.

My hope is that Breaking into Product Marketing will become a guidebook for anyone who truly wants to understand this role, how to interview for it, and how it best fits into their own company or organization.

The Launch: A Product Marketer's Guide. 50 key questions and lessons for a successful launch 🙌

Validation and a go-to-market (GTM) strategy are often missing between the hypothesis stage and the launch phase. Companies build a product they assume consumers want but fail to meet the demands of the market, and then they expect marketing to deliver it successfully to consumers.

There is only so much marketing can do once a product has been built unless a number of key inputs and factors are considered from an operational and market validation perspective.

While building the right feature set for a product is absolutely necessary, many companies fail to think about the most important part of launching a product—their target customer.

People used to ask me: Why do you write so much content about product marketing?

Over the years, I've received hundreds of emails and messages thanking me for my content. I just received this one this past weekend, and wanted to share the sentiments strangers have shared with me about my product marketing content and book.

It is an honor to serve the community of product marketers who have the difficult position in owning so much of the success of a launch, without a lot of recognition.

If you'd like to purchase The Launch: 50 Key Questions and Lessons for A Successful Launch, you can find it on Amazon.

What are some of the most important things to think about when building the right team structure for a launch?

In this episode on The Essential Go-To-Market show produced by Sharebird, I interview Susan "Spark" Park, Head of Product Marketing, VR Work Experiences, at Oculus VR, where she leads a team of product marketers focused on enabling platform features and experiences to make work possible in Virtual Reality.

Check out the full episode here, and a short snippet below: https://lnkd.in/gYPxvAty

We talk about
✅ Her top takeaways which include understanding your target audience, understanding your goals of the product and what the product should be able to achieve, so you can diagnose issues, and iterating with a prioritization process
✅ What she has learned about team structure, which includes
Building a team that can always stay close to how the product is changing and resonating with the audience.
✅ The most successful products that she has seen that continue on their growth trajectory either have the Product Marketer convert their responsibilities into an activation/growth expert after the product launches, OR have hired an additional person to drive commercialization and ensure ongoing product/market fit with an audience.
✅ Some of her biggest mistakes that she’s made which include
Not truly understanding the target audience outputs like retention
Growing too fast: pushing growth/marketing before understanding WHY the product is growing with a specific audience. A big mistake is growing the wrong feature sets and ending up having to untangle things later.
✅ Her GTM checklist before a launch

You can find Susan “Spark” Park on Linkedin if you’d like to stay in touch.
