She barely spoke the entire evening.
Sitting across from her husband, she slowly turned a cup of long-cold tea in her hands, almost afraid to look up. Outside, rain tapped heavily against the windows. The apartment smelled of medicine, exhaustion, and that kind of silent despair people never speak about out loud.
Four years.
Four endless years of tests, hospital visits, cold stares from strangers, and questions that made everything inside her tighten:
“So… when are you finally having kids?..”
At first, they laughed it off.
Then they started avoiding family gatherings.
Eventually, they stopped talking about it altogether.
He saw her crying at night in the bathroom, believing the sound of running water would hide her sobs.
He saw the hidden pregnancy tests.
He noticed how she secretly saved videos of babies, only to delete them moments later as if it were something shameful.
But that evening felt different.
Suddenly, she placed a small white box in front of him.
Without saying a word.
He frowned.
Probably more medication.
Another treatment.
Another fragile hope that was terrifying to hold onto.
— Open it, — she whispered softly.
His fingers trembled even more than hers.
Inside was a tiny knitted baby sock.
Just one.
A single second of silence felt endless.
He stared at it as if he couldn’t understand what it meant.
As if his mind refused to accept reality after years of disappointment.
And then…
— No… — he breathed out. — No, this can’t be real…
She nodded silently.
And in that moment, something inside him broke.
A man who always kept everything bottled up.
Who never cried after all those painful diagnoses.
Who kept saying, “We’ll get through this,” even when he had already stopped believing it himself…
He simply dropped to his knees in the middle of the kitchen.
And he cried as though all those years of pain had finally poured out of him at once.
She cried too.
They both laughed through tears.
They couldn’t believe it.
They were afraid to believe it.
But the worst part came a few weeks later.
During another appointment, the doctor suddenly fell silent, staring at the monitor for far too long.
Then he said a sentence that made her hands turn ice cold…
