At first glance, a damselfly might look like a miniature dragonfly, but the two are distinct creatures. They share membership in the order Odonata, a group of 5,000+ species in which damselflies make up roughly a third.
The differences are easy to spot once you know what to look for.
Damselflies are smaller and more slender than their stocky cousins, and they tend to fly with less speed and power.
Their resting posture is another giveaway — most damselflies fold their wings back along their bodies, while dragonflies hold theirs spread wide to either side.
The clearest distinction of all may be the eyes 👀 a dragonfly’s eyes meet at the top of its head, while a damselfly’s are set far apart, leaving a visible gap between them.
Crazy that these cuties have been on earth for more than 300 million years! Thankfully the wingspan has shrunk a little… from 30 feet to this little guy 😂🫶🏼
