On Thursday night, O’Dea’s own Coach Monte Kohler became the all-time winningest high school football coach in Washington state with his 395th career victory, surpassing legendary Tumwater coach Sid Otton.
Coach Kohler has led the O’Dea football program since 1985, and that same year took on the additional role of Athletic Director. Over 41 seasons, he has built one of the most respected and consistently excellent programs in the state.
Under his leadership, O’Dea has captured five State Football Championships: in 1991, 1994, 1995, 2017, and 2024. Last year’s championship run was especially memorable, as the Fighting Irish put together an undefeated season that culminated at Husky Stadium with a decisive victory over Bellevue. Being part of that journey will forever be a highlight for our family.
What makes his legacy so remarkable isn’t just the wins or titles. Coach Kohler combines high expectations with genuine kindness and love for his players. He challenges them to be their best on the field and in life, and the result is not only championships but generations of young men who carry themselves with integrity and respect.
We feel incredibly fortunate that our son has had the opportunity to play under Coach Kohler these last two years on varsity. The lessons of discipline, teamwork, and character will last a lifetime.
Originally from Montana, Coach Kohler has shown unwavering loyalty and commitment to O’Dea. His devotion has shaped the school, its community, and thousands of young men who were lucky enough to play for him.
Congratulations, Coach Kohler, on this historic milestone—and thank you for everything you’ve given to O’Dea.
