What does the first year of being a published author actually look like?

David Larsen, author of "Green Street in Black and White: A Chicago Story", pulls back the curtain in a new blog post on the Front Edge Publishing (FEP) website. From debuting on Amazon with three "best seller" flags to traveling 2,000+ miles to connect with book clubs and university groups, Dave's journey offers an honest and encouraging look at hybrid publishing β€” and what it takes to build a genuine readership.

He also credits the production and marketing team at Front Edge Publishing and Reformed Journal Books, noting the value of having experienced professionals handle editing, cover design, social media strategy, audio production, and ongoing author coaching.

For authors considering the hybrid publishing path, Dave's reflection is worth a read.

It's been one year since Dave Larsen published Green Street in Black and White: A Chicago Story β€” and what a year it's been.

πŸ“–In a new blog post, Dave reflects on 2,000+ miles of travel, book clubs, church groups, podcasts, and the readers who have made it all worthwhile. His 4.7-star Amazon rating speaks for itself, but it's the personal moments β€” readers sharing passages with their spouses, remembering their own experiences with race and faith β€” that have meant the most.

Dave also shares a heartfelt thank-you to the team at Front Edge Publishing and Reformed Journal Books for guiding him from what he calls "naΓ―vetΓ© to reality."If you're an aspiring author β€” or just a fan of a good Chicago story β€” this one's for you.

Is Goodreads dying β€” and does Amazon.com even care?

David Crumm, founding editor of Front Edge Publishing, has spent the past year watching a once-beloved community of book lovers quietly fade away. In a new column, he shares a sobering conclusion: Amazon's apparent neglect has sent Goodreads into a downward spiral β€” and Marketing Director Susan Stitt agrees.

As Susan puts it, Goodreads is "no longer on the short list of recommended social media platforms" for the authors we represent. Buggy functionality, unchecked spam reviews, and tools that have been monetized into near-uselessness have taken their toll.

So where are readers gathering now? Read David's full reflection β€” and find out where we think the real reading community lives today.

I'm a Motown girl at heart β€” born and raised in Detroit, even if I now call Senoia, Georgia, home. So when Albom releases a new novel, I pay attention. And when I read Twice, I knew I had to bring it to life for my book club.

So I went all in. A clock stopped at 12:06. A large elephant named Lallu on my kitchen island. A vintage Dionne Warwick 45 playing in the background. Twice-baked potatoes on the menu. And a wedding tasting β€” cayenne, lemon, vinegar, and honey β€” that stopped the conversation cold.

This October, my Michigan high school sweetheart and I celebrate 42 years together. I've tasted all four of those ingredients. Every single one.

Read the full story on the FEP blog β€” including discussion questions for your own Twice book club night. And tell me: is there a moment in your life you'd want to redo?

Spent a fun long weekend in Kentucky on the bourbon trail! Boy, do the bourbon folks know how to market! I love good marketing! They offer distillery tours with knowledgeable and engaging tour guides; they share their products and build brand loyalty through education and tasting opportunities. I'm looking at you Maker's Mark Distillery (I'm a 15-year Brand Ambassador), Four Roses Bourbon, Woodford Reserve, and James E. Pepper Distillery . We loved visiting the area, especially a stop at the The Kentucky Castle where bartender Jordon hustled like no bartender I've ever seen!

I spend every day trying to promote the work of authors who have poured their hearts and souls into their books. So, it was with great frustration and a river of emotions that I experienced this morning as I read Christy Lubbers Berghoef's latest blog post. If you are a writer, you'll want to read this warning blog post. Link in the comments.
