The photo that started it. I recently did an interview for a magazine, and one of the questions was, “What got you started?” The answer is simple enough, my dad gave me a camera. I’ll always appreciate that he shared his love of photography with me.
I imagined images in my head of moments I wanted to hold onto, and it’s mainly the lifestyle portraits of people in their everyday lives that I love the most.
The moment in this photograph is a day that I think back to often, my grandpa and I picking sweet corn. I loved driving around with him and just capturing life around me. Seeing how this roll of film turned out just made me super happy. Some of my favorite photos. This girl never thought 20 years later that she would be answering this question for a magazine interview.

Today I’m wrapping up this year’s Ribbon Skirt Showcase 🤍

I always enjoy this series, especially looking back and seeing how it’s grown over the last three years. It truly gets better every year, and I’m so grateful for that.

I’m thankful for everyone who made it into my studio, those who shared my work online, and those who even traveled distances to have their portraits taken. That means more to me than you know.

I’m also grateful for those who had every intention of coming but our schedules just didn’t line up. April is always such a busy month with graduation, spring photos, and senior portraits, so I understand how quickly things fill up.

Usually I like to start this project in March, but this year has been a tough one for me. I wasn’t even planning on doing the showcase. But with the encouragement from so many of you, I decided to move forward anyway, knowing it wouldn’t be perfect. I knew I might not fill every day or be able to get everyone in, and I accepted that.

Even so, I’m really happy with what was created.

To those who missed out, there will always be more opportunities 🤍

This showcase has helped me in ways I didn’t expect. It’s pushed me to keep creating, even during a time where I didn’t feel creative at all. It reminded me that life keeps going, and sometimes you just have to keep going with it.

I bought and wore this skirt for the funeral of my auntie-mom, Natalie, who passed on to the spirit world earlier this year.

This ribbon skirt reminds me of the difficult things that we have to do and carry as Indian women and the ways in which we step up to hold and guide our families through life’s battles. The skirt’s colors, the soft and earthy pinks and browns with a solid black ribbon bring to mind our ability to be both tender and stern, compassionate yet firm.

The greatest gift I have been given in this world is being an Indian woman. To see a ribbon skirt out in the world is a gentle reminder that everything will be okay because our future is in the hands of beautiful and strong Native women.

The significance of my ribbon skirt is incredibly special to me. I made it specifically for my naming ceremony, which was held on the first day of my tribe’s Hede’Wachi, which marked the beginning of a sacred "homecoming" and harvest celebration.

This garment represents a deeply personal milestone in my life, symbolizing my return to my people and the honor of receiving my Umoⁿhoⁿ name.
