Let’s talk about the conversations every leader dreads and why avoiding them costs you more than you think.
Back when I worked in the corporate world, I led a team of 17 people. And as you can imagine, especially in Q4, that meant some tough conversations.
I remember one in particular.
I had an employee who kept missing crucial deadlines. The pressure was high, projects were stacking up, and I knew I had to address it BEFORE the year was over.
Sure, as I climbed the corporate ladder, I knew these hard conversations came with the territory.
But what no one ever taught me was this: how I approached the conversation mattered just as much as what I said. This was a key missing piece!
So instead of going in frustrated or guarded, I led with care.
Care for the person and care for the project.
That single shift helped me become the leader that confidently delivered on our projects AND the manager that people actually wanted to work for.
The conversation became productive instead of tense.
We found common ground.
We rebuilt trust.
AND we finished the project stronger than we started.
It taught me something I still carry into my work today:
Confidence doesn’t mean being forceful.
It means being grounded enough to care, even when it’s uncomfortable.
If you’ve been putting off a hard conversation because you’re not sure how to approach it without it blowing up or backfiring, that’s something I help my clients with every day.
Let’s talk about how to lead those conversations with calm, clarity, and confidence.
