Here's why one failed moisture read can blow up an entire job before you even start.

Concrete is porous. If there's excess moisture v***r trying to escape through that slab and you coat over it anyway, that moisture has nowhere to go. It builds up underneath your coating until it delaminates, bubbles, or peels, sometimes in weeks, sometimes months later.

A failed moisture test isn't a reason to walk away from the job. It's information. It tells you that you need a moisture mitigation system, a different product, or additional prep before you ever open a bucket of epoxy.

Skip that test, or ignore a bad result to save time, and you're not saving anything. You're signing up for a callback, a warranty claim, and a homeowner who tells everyone they know not to hire you.

Test the moisture. Every single time. No exceptions.

Should you offer a lifetime warranty on your coatings? Here's how I think about it.

A lifetime warranty isn't really about the warranty. It's about the confidence it signals before you ever say a word. When a homeowner hears "lifetime warranty," their guard drops. It tells them you're not planning on disappearing after the check clears.

Yes, it means you need to be using a system and process you genuinely trust, because you will get called back on a small percentage of jobs. That's the cost of doing business.

But the coaters winning the biggest jobs in this industry aren't the cheapest. They're the ones customers trust the most. And nothing builds trust faster than standing behind your work for as long as the customer owns the home.

If your close rate is suffering and you're not backing your work with a real warranty, that might be exactly why.

If you're not offering financing to your customers, you're leaving money on the table every single week.

Most homeowners aren't sitting on $8,000-$15,000 in cash for a garage floor or patio coating. But plenty of them can afford $150-$250 a month.

When you offer financing, you're not just making the sale easier. You're expanding your entire market. Suddenly the homeowner who "needed to think about it" because of the upfront cost has a way to say yes today.

Coaters who offer financing consistently close bigger jobs, upsell more add-ons, and close a higher percentage of their estimates. It's one of the simplest changes you can make to your sales process, and it pays for itself on the very first job it saves.

If you don't have a financing partner set up yet, that needs to be at the top of your list this week.

Ask yourself this question today: what will it actually take to get you from where you are right now to where you want to be in your business?

Not someday. Not "eventually." This year, specifically.

Is it more leads? A better sales process? Hiring your first crew so you're not the bottleneck? Offering financing so customers say yes faster? A better close rate?

Most concrete coaters I talk to can tell me exactly where they want to be in 12 months: revenue number, crew size, lifestyle. But when I ask what it will take to get there, I get a shrug.

The gap between where you are and where you want to be isn't luck. It's a list. Write down the three things standing between you and that number, then go fix them, one at a time, starting today.

One day install vs two day install: let's talk about it.

Everybody wants to advertise the "one day install." It sounds great in a Facebook ad. Rip out the old concrete or prep the garage floor, coat it, and be done before dinner.

But here's the question you need to ask as a business owner: what are you sacrificing for that speed?

Proper surface prep, correct cure times between coats, and real quality control all take time. Rush them and you're gambling with adhesion failures, bubbling, and warranty claims six months down the road.

A two day install isn't slower because your crew is inefficient. It's slower because you're doing it right: full prep, correct broadcast, proper cure time between layers, and a topcoat that's actually ready to perform.

Speed sells the first job. Quality sells the next ten, through referrals. Which one are you actually building your business around?

To every new concrete coater walking into this industry with zero experience: welcome.

I know some veterans roll their eyes when someone new fires up an Instagram page and starts booking jobs in their first month. I don't.

Competition isn't the enemy of your business. Complacency is.

Every new coater who enters this space forces the rest of us to sharpen our sales process, improve our finish quality, tighten our marketing, and take better care of customers than we did last year. Without competition pushing you, you stagnate, and a stagnant business is a dying business.

So if you're brand new to this trade with no track record and no fear, get in the game. You'll either make everyone around you better, or you'll find out fast what it takes to survive. Either way, the industry wins.

Bring it.

I had an aha moment last week that changed how I see business forever.

One of the concrete coaters in my 6-month 0-100 growth program landed a lead who had already started the process with another coater. My guy closed them anyway. He got the job.

It stopped me in my tracks. Was that the right move? Was it moral? What even IS morality in business? I spent weeks turning that over in my head.

Here's what I landed on: business isn't a morality contest. It's a power contest. It's a sport.

Who has the strongest reputation? The tightest sales process? The better product? The sharper marketing? Every one of those is a form of power, and the business with more of it wins the job, every time.

My guy didn't "steal" a lead. He simply showed up with more power in that moment than the other coater did. That's the whole game.

Stop asking whether you're being "fair" to your competition. Start asking whether you're building more power than the guy down the street. Because if you're not, someone who is will take what you thought was yours.

Nietzsche called it the will to power. In this industry, I call it Tuesday.

I lost someone close to me recently, a relationship that I cherished. I wish I had reached out sooner, even just a short message to check in and see how he was doing. It is such a simple thing to do and somehow still one of the easiest things that we put off. A reminder for all of us in business, the people you work with, negotiate with, and build things alongside are human beings first. Right now, send the text you have been meaning to send. Make the call you keep pushing to next week. Don't let "we should catch up soon" sit unsent in your drafts while life keeps moving. You never know which conversation is the last one you get to have.

SAY IT WITH YOUR CHEST! If you do not say what you actually mean, you are being passive aggressive whether you realize it or not, and you will miss the real conversation that needed to happen in the first place. Say it with your chest, tell your business partners and your clients exactly where you stand, even when it is uncomfortable. And when someone else will not do the same for you, call it out directly instead of letting it slide, make them say it with their chest, then have the conversation. That is how you get people back in line with reality instead of dancing around the real issue for weeks or months at a time. Directness is respect, and it saves everyone involved a lot of wasted time and confusion down the road.

Alexander the Great conquered most of the known world by his early thirties, moving fast with an army that trusted his instincts even when the full plan was not yet formed. Napoleon rebuilt an empire from nothing MORE THAN ONCE, adapting on the fly every single time circumstances switched up on him. Neither of them sat around waiting for perfect conditions or a flawless plan, they moved forward with the information they had in front of them and adjusted while already in motion. Most business owners today do the exact opposite, they overthink the plan for weeks and underdo the actual ex*****on for months. Certainty is never going to show up before you start. Move anyway, adjust as you go, and let the plan catch up to the action.
